Jobs in the USA From India: the main work visa pathways
Jobs in the USA from India. US federal rules as of 31 October 2026. Sources re-checked against official pages on 30 October 2026. Where a figure could not be confirmed, this page links the official source instead of stating it.
There is no single US work visa for Indians. You reach a US job through a specific route, and each has its own employer, timeline and limits. The United States is not an ECR country, so no emigration clearance applies. This page maps the routes and points to detailed guides for Indian applicants.
Which route fits which person?
| If you are... | Common route | Read |
|---|---|---|
| A professional with a US employer ready to register you | H-1B | H-1B from India, stamping in India |
| A student in the US on F-1 | OPT and STEM OPT, then H-1B | OPT and STEM OPT for Indian students, F-1 to H-1B |
| An employee of a company with a US office | L-1 | L-1 transfer from an Indian company, H-1B vs L-1 |
| Already on H-1B, with a spouse | H-4 EAD | H-4 EAD |
| Seeking permanent residence | EB-2, EB-3, EB-2 NIW | EB-2 vs EB-3, NIW, Visa Bulletin for Indians, backlog |
| A fresher | F-1 first, sponsorship later | Freshers and US jobs |
What is the same across routes?
- A US employer, a school or an eligible relative usually starts the process, not you.
- You need a consular visa interview in India for most routes. See visa documents checklist and dropbox waiver.
- The government decides. A job listing that mentions sponsorship is not a promise.
USCIS lists the temporary worker and permanent worker categories on its website. Start there to confirm the rules for any category.
Why does the green card take longer for Indians?
US law limits the share of employment-based visas for any one country, and the demand from India exceeds that share. The Department of State sets a cut-off date for each category and country in its monthly Visa Bulletin. Read the backlog guide and how to read the Visa Bulletin. LiveRec does not quote the current dates here because they change every month.
How do I search for jobs that state visa sponsorship?
LiveRec job listings cannot be filtered by sponsorship that employers set, so do not rely on a filter. Instead:
- Open Find jobs and type the role and the country or city in the search box.
- Open each listing and read the full description for the words visa, sponsorship, relocation or work permit.
- If the listing is silent, ask the employer in a message before you invest time. See how to message an employer and how to ask about sponsorship.
- Save a job alert so new listings for that role and place reach you.
Read the whole listing and the offer letter. A mention of sponsorship in a listing is not a promise of a visa, and a visa is always decided by the destination country's government.
Scam warning
See avoiding immigration scams and job scam safety for India. No one can sell you an H-1B, a lottery win or a green card place. Only the employer files an H-1B registration, and you never pay for it.
