USA jobs for Indian freshers with visa sponsorship
US federal rules as of 30 October 2026. Sources re-checked against official pages on 30 October 2026. Where a figure could not be confirmed, this page links the official source instead of stating it.
Visa sponsorship for Indian freshers seeking USA jobs is limited. A US employer cannot simply hire and sponsor you directly: the H-1B needs a specialty-occupation degree-level role, a March registration and selection, and few employers sponsor entry-level hires from abroad. The common route is a US degree, then OPT, then H-1B. Beware of anyone promising a guaranteed US job.
What are the realistic routes?
| Route | Fit |
|---|---|
| US master's on F-1, then OPT and H-1B | Most common |
| Company transfer after one year abroad (L-1) | If you join a multinational first. See L-1 from an Indian IT company |
| Direct H-1B from India | Possible; competitive and needs a registering employer |

What does the path look like step by step?
- Choose a US degree program. Study full time in a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). USCIS says F-1 students may apply for OPT after one full academic year.
- Apply for OPT. Your DSO recommends OPT in SEVIS, and you file Form I-765 with USCIS. For initial post-completion OPT, USCIS says to apply within 30 days of the DSO's recommendation entry, up to 90 days before you complete your degree and no later than 60 days after. You cannot start until USCIS approves it and you hold your EAD.
- Work in a field related to your major. OPT employment must be directly related to your major area of study.
- STEM OPT. If your degree is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List and your employer is enrolled in E-Verify, you can apply for a 24-month extension.
- H-1B registration. An employer registers you in the March window. USCIS says that starting in FY 2027 selection is weighted by wage level. An additional 20,000 petitions for people with a US master's degree or higher are exempt from the regular cap.
- Cap-gap. If your employer files an eligible H-1B petition for a change of status on or after April 1 with an October 1 start, and your OPT ends on or after April 1, SEVP says SEVIS will extend your OPT automatically.
How is a fresher in India different?
If you are in India and have not studied in the US, there is no OPT. The H-1B route needs an employer who registers you and a job that requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific specialty. USCIS says the position must be a specialty occupation, and the beneficiary needs a US bachelor's or higher or a foreign equivalent, or equivalent education and experience. An L-1 needs one continuous year of work for a qualifying company abroad within the prior three years, so it only suits freshers who join a multinational first.
What should I check before a job offer?
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Does the job require a bachelor's degree in a specific specialty? | USCIS says H-1B jobs must |
| Does the company register in March? | Only the employer can register |
| For STEM OPT, is it enrolled in E-Verify? | USCIS requires it |
| Who pays, and what is the timeline? | Get it in writing |
Common mistakes
- Paying a consultancy for a "guaranteed" job or H-1B. See avoiding immigration scams.
- Joining a program or employer that does not fit OPT rules.
- Letting unemployment days run on OPT. See OPT unemployment rules.
- Using the wrong wage level or job title in the registration.
FAQ
Can a fresher get an H-1B directly? Possible, but the role and employer must meet the rules.
Can I get a job in the US from India without a US degree? It is possible only with an employer who files for you, and the visa categories above apply. LiveRec does not guarantee any placement.
Do I need a master's degree? No. A bachelor's or equivalent can qualify for an H-1B specialty occupation, but the extra 20,000 is for US master's degrees or higher.
