Job description format for India

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

In India, a job description (JD) format usually states the job title, location, experience range, CTC range in LPA (lakh per annum), skills, shift and notice-period expectations, then the duties. Use plain language, state the pay range, describe the real work, and avoid wording that excludes people on age, gender, religion, caste or disability.

India format, as of 31 October 2026.

At a glance

  • Lead with title, location, experience and CTC range so candidates can decide quickly.
  • CTC is the employer's total yearly cost, not in-hand pay. Say so in the JD or offer.
  • Mention shift, work mode (office, hybrid, remote) and expected notice period.
  • Keep requirements to what the job really needs.

Tips for India JDs

  • Pay. Give a CTC range in LPA, and for entry-level roles a monthly range as well. Any figure you publish must be a real offer.
  • Statutory benefits. Say whether PF and ESI apply instead of listing every perk. See PF, ESI and gratuity for employers.
  • Location. Name the city and state, and say if relocation is needed.
  • Qualifications. Do not ask for more than you need. "Any graduate" is clearer than a long list.
  • Inclusion. Avoid age, gender, religion, caste or marital status in requirements. Invite persons with disabilities to apply; see the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for official guidance.
  • Scams. Never ask applicants for money. Real JDs never include a "registration fee".
