Jobs for women in India: safe work, rights and official help

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

Women in India can work in any kind of job, and the law allows it in every establishment. To find safe, genuine jobs for women, apply through verified channels, confirm the employer in writing, and never pay a fee. Official helplines and portals exist if you face harassment or a fake offer.

At a glance

  • The OSH Code says women are entitled to be employed in all establishments for all types of work.
  • Women Helpline 181 and the SHe-Box portal are run under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
  • The National Career Service portal says it charges no fee to jobseekers.
  • Fake "work from home" offers often target women. Never pay to get work.

What does the law say about women at work?

Section 43 of the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 says women shall be entitled to be employed in all establishments for all types of work. It also says women may be employed before 6 a.m. and beyond 7 p.m. with their consent, subject to conditions on safety, holidays and working hours that the appropriate government prescribes. Section 44 allows the government to restrict women's employment in operations it considers dangerous to their health and safety. Read more in night shift jobs and maternity benefit.

Which official schemes support working women?

The Ministry of Women and Child Development describes Mission Shakti as an umbrella scheme for the safety, security and empowerment of women. Its page lists, among other components:

  • One Stop Centres and Women Helplines, under its Sambal sub-scheme.
  • Sakhi Niwas, described as working women hostels, and Palna, described as crèches, under its Samarthya sub-scheme.

Availability depends on your state and district. Check the Ministry's pages or call 181 for what is open near you.

How do I check a job is safe?

  • Search for the employer's name, address and website separately from the message that reached you. See how to verify an employer.
  • Prefer interviews in a public office or a verified video call. Tell a family member or friend where you are going.
  • Read the offer letter for the hours, the shift and the reporting line before you accept.
  • Never share an OTP, Aadhaar or bank details before a written offer. See Aadhaar, PAN and bank details requests.

What if I face harassment or a scam?

  • Workplace sexual harassment: the Ministry of Women and Child Development's home page links the SHe-Box portal for filing a workplace sexual harassment complaint.
  • Distress or safety concerns: Women Helpline, toll-free 181.
  • Lost money to a fake job: call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in, then read lost money to job fraud.
  • A suspicious call, SMS or WhatsApp message: report it through Sanchar Saathi Chakshu. Chakshu does not recover money.
