Work from home jobs in India: how to find genuine ones
A genuine work-from-home job in India is a normal job done remotely: you get an offer letter, a named employer and regular pay, and you never pay to start. Offers that promise easy daily income for little work, or ask for a fee or deposit first, are the usual scams.
At a glance
- Remote work still needs a verifiable employer, a written offer and a pay date.
- No genuine employer asks for a registration fee, security deposit or paid "training kit".
- Do not share OTPs, UPI PINs or bank passwords with a recruiter.
- Check whether you are an employee or a freelancer, because rights and tax differ.
What kinds of remote work are real?
| Type | Usual features |
|---|---|
| Remote employee roles (support, IT, content, sales) | Offer letter, payroll, usually PF where it applies |
| Freelance projects (writing, design, development, data entry) | Paid per project; you invoice; no employee benefits |
| Home-based shift work (voice or chat support) | Training and equipment rules set in the contract |
How do I check an employer before I accept?
- Look for the company's own website and compare the recruiter's email domain with it. A free email address is a warning.
- Search the legal name on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs site (mca.gov.in). A missing record does not prove fraud, since some employers are not companies, but ask more questions.
- Ask for a video or voice call with a named person, and for the offer in writing.
- Call the company on a number from its official website.
The full checklist is in how to identify fake job offers in India.
What should the offer say?
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Employer legal name and address | Lets you verify them |
| Role, hours and pay date | Prevents surprise changes |
| Who provides the laptop and internet | Equipment costs can be yours or the employer's |
| Employee or contractor | Decides PF, notice and tax; see PF and ESI |
What are the common work-from-home scams?
Typing or form-filling "at home" jobs that need a registration fee, "product review" or video-liking tasks that pay a little and then ask you to deposit money, and fake offer letters sent from free email accounts. If you have lost money, call 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. To report a suspected fraud call, SMS or WhatsApp message, use Sanchar Saathi Chakshu (sancharsaathi.gov.in); Chakshu is for reporting suspicious messages, not for recovering money already lost.

Verify before you start: a six step test
- The employer is named, with a registered address and a business email.
- You have a written offer with job title, duties, pay terms and reporting manager.
- You are never asked to pay, deposit or "unlock" anything. The National Career Service says job seekers should not pay fees to employers.
- Equipment and software are provided by the employer or clearly listed.
- The interview is with a named person on a video or phone call you can verify, not only chat.
- The pay terms say who pays you, how often and how.
Common mistakes
- Trusting a message that offers pay for liking videos, rating products or typing captchas. See task and captcha scams.
- Starting work before you have an offer.
- Paying for a laptop, a "license" or training.
- Sharing OTPs or bank logins "for payroll." See Aadhaar, PAN and bank details.
- Moving all communication to a messaging app.
What a genuine remote offer usually covers
Place of work (home), working hours or output expected, tools provided, data security rules, pay and pay date, probation, notice period and the PF and ESI position. Ask HR in writing whether PF and ESI apply. See PF and ESI.
