Is a Telegram or WhatsApp task job real or a fraud?

Task jobs on Telegram or WhatsApp, where you like videos, rate places or solve captchas for pay, are a known fraud pattern. You are paid a small amount at first, then asked to deposit money for "premium tasks" and cannot withdraw. If you are asked to put in your own money to earn, it is a fraud.

How the trap works

  1. A message offers part-time work from home with daily pay.
  2. You complete simple tasks and receive a small amount, which builds trust.
  3. You are added to a group where others claim large earnings.
  4. A "prepaid" or "premium" task needs a deposit. Later tasks need more.
  5. The balance shown in the app cannot be withdrawn unless you pay again.

Signs

  • You must pay money to work. Real work pays you.
  • Payments go to personal accounts or changing UPI IDs.
  • There is no company, contract or tax paperwork.
  • Group members push you to deposit; they may be part of the scheme.

If you are in it now

Stop depositing. Paying to unlock earlier deposits is the same trap. Save screenshots, UPI IDs, phone numbers, account numbers and transaction details. Then report to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in without delay. Report the sender's number through Chakshu too; see how to report.

Real online work

Genuine freelance or data work has a named company, a written agreement and pays you without a deposit from you.

FAQ

I earned a small payout. Doesn't that prove it is real? No. The payout is bait for the larger deposit.

Can I get the deposit back? Report quickly; recovery is not guaranteed.

The pay rule that exposes the trap

The Ministry of Labour and Employment handbook for employers says wages must be paid within set timelines: at the end of the day for daily wages, on the last working day of the week for weekly wages, before the end of the second day after a fortnight, and before the seventh day of the following month for monthly wages. It also says employers must issue wage slips on or before payment. A real employer pays you for work you have done. It does not ask you to deposit money to "unlock" earnings.

Step by step if you are in a task group now

  1. Stop depositing. Do not pay "tax," "withdrawal charges" or "level upgrade" fees.
  2. Screenshot the group, the profiles, the payment instructions and the number.
  3. Do not delete the chat until you have saved evidence.
  4. If you paid, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in and tell your bank.
  5. Report the sender on Chakshu through Sanchar Saathi, if the number is visible.
  6. Leave the group after saving evidence. Do not recruit friends.

Common mistakes

  • Treating early small payouts as proof. They are bait.
  • Sending more money to recover the earlier money.
  • Giving a bank login or OTP for "payment verification."
  • Using the same phone number for banking and for chats with the group.
  • Believing a message that names the NCS or a ministry. The NCS says it charges no fee at any stage and warns about misuse of its name and logo.

What genuine online work looks like
