How do I verify a company before accepting a job in India?
India: official channels as of 30 Oct 2026. Official links checked on 30 October 2026.
Verify a company in India by confirming it exists, that the job is listed by it and that the person contacting you works there. Use the company's own website, public registration records and an HR contact you looked up yourself. Never rely on phone numbers or links sent by the recruiter.
How to verify a company in India: the checks
- Website and careers page. Type the address yourself. Is the job listed there?
- Email domain. The recruiter's email should match the company's domain exactly. Watch for added words, hyphens or swapped letters.
- Registration. Indian companies are registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and carry a Corporate Identity Number (CIN). The MCA website lets you look up a registered company by name or CIN. Compare the registered name with the name on your offer. A sole proprietor or partnership will not have a CIN, so use other checks for those.
- HR contact. Write to the company's published HR address and ask them to confirm the recruiter, the role and the offer.
- Office and people. Does the company have a physical address and employees you can find from independent sources?
- Search. Search the company with "fraud" or "complaint".
- Money test. Any request for a fee fails the test; see registration fee scams.
A real company name is not proof
Scammers impersonate real companies. A genuine registration shows the company exists, not that the person messaging you works there. That is why steps 2 and 4 matter.
For jobs abroad
See overseas job fraud, which has extra checks on agents.
On LiveRec
A Verified mark means a company's registration passed a check; today that badge applies to US registrations, and Indian employers can post without it. Read what LiveRec checks.
FAQ
Do small companies fail these checks? Not necessarily. Look for consistency between name, domain, contact and requests.
Is a Naukri or LinkedIn listing proof? No listing site can guarantee every poster. Use the same checks.
Official lists and registers
| Check | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Blacklisted entities and active recruitment agencies | The National Career Service portal lists blacklisted entities and active recruitment agencies and international employers |
| Registered recruitment agents for overseas jobs | The eMigrate portal holds the public list, and the MEA says illegal agents are notified there |
| Foreign employers | The MEA says foreign employers must register on eMigrate before recruiting from India, so Indian missions can verify them |
A written checklist to ask for
The Ministry of Labour and Employment handbook describes duties that a genuine employer in India has once you join: an appointment letter to every employee, wage slips on or before payment of wages, annual free health check-ups, and electronic registration of an establishment with 10 or more employees under the OSH Code. You do not have to inspect their records, but you can ask:
- Who is the legal employer named in my appointment letter?
- Will I receive wage slips?
- Do PF and ESI apply to me? See PF and ESI.
- What is the registered office address?
Step by step
- Search the company name on the NCS blacklist and with words like "complaint."
- Compare the website domain, the email domain and the name on the letter.
- Call the registered office number you found on the company website.
- Ask a current employee on a professional network, only through public profiles.
- Confirm the interviewer's name with HR.
Common mistakes
- Accepting a small company's word that it is "registered."
- Checking only the logo.
- Checking a company by calling the number in the message.
- Skipping the check because the pay looks good.
More questions people ask
What if the company has no website?
Be careful. Ask for an official email, a registered address and written terms.
Does an NCS listing mean a job is guaranteed genuine?
The NCS publishes a blacklist and says its services are free, but you should still run the checks above.
