Data entry jobs in India: how to find genuine work

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

A data entry job means typing or copying information into a computer system accurately, for example records, forms or invoices. Genuine data entry roles pay a salary or an agreed rate and never charge you to start. Offers that sell you forms, software or a login are scams.

At a glance

  • Typing speed, accuracy and basic Excel are the core skills.
  • Employers often give a typing or accuracy test as part of hiring.
  • Real work is paid by the employer; you do not buy forms, software or a plan to get it.
  • Be careful with "typing at home" ads and captcha-typing offers.

What is the work like?

SettingWhat to expect

Part of a back office roleMix of entry, checking and reports; see back office jobs

How do I prepare?

Practise typing with accuracy rather than only speed, learn basic Excel functions, and keep a clean resume. See the fresher resume format.

What are the red flags?

To report a suspected fraud call, SMS or WhatsApp message, use Sanchar Saathi Chakshu (sancharsaathi.gov.in); Chakshu is for reporting suspicious messages, not for recovering money already lost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do data entry from home? Some employers allow it. Get the terms in writing and verify the employer first.

Do I need a laptop? It depends on the offer. Ask who provides equipment before you accept.

How to test a data entry offer in five steps

  1. Name the employer. If the listing only names a "team" or a chat handle, stop.
  2. Ask who pays whom. In genuine employment the employer pays you. If you are asked to pay for software, forms, a "kit", a "license" or "verification," do not continue. See registration fee scams.
  3. Ask for the offer in writing with the employer's registered name, your pay terms and your reporting manager.
  4. Check the company on its own website and through a phone number you find yourself.
  5. Do a small paid-by-employer trial only if the employer sends the contract first.

What the National Career Service says

The NCS portal states that it does not charge any fee at any stage of registration, job application or interview processing, and that job seekers should not pay fees to employers. It also publishes a list of blacklisted entities and warns that some websites and people falsely use the NCS name and logo. The NCS helpline is 1514, and it points to 1930 for cyber fraud.

Common mistakes

  • Believing "earn per page" or "earn per form" promises. Never rely on promised earnings that you cannot check.
  • Paying a "refundable deposit." Refund promises are how the trap works.
  • Moving the conversation to Telegram or WhatsApp straight away. See task and captcha scams.
  • Keeping the same phone number and ignoring a suspicious one. You can check how many mobile connections are registered in your name on Sanchar Saathi (TAFCOP) and report ones you did not take.

If you already paid

Collect screenshots, payment receipts, UPI IDs and phone numbers. Call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in, then tell your bank. For a suspicious call or message, report the sender through Chakshu on Sanchar Saathi. See lost money to job fraud and where to report.
