How to identify fake job offers in India
India focus on how to identify fake job offers, as of 30 October 2026. Dates written DD Month YYYY.
A fake job offer in India usually asks you to pay something (registration, training, laptop deposit, "security amount") or to share documents and OTPs before you have met anyone. A genuine employer does not charge you to hire you. If you see a fee, stop and verify the company independently.
At a glance
- No real employer asks for a registration fee, security deposit or "kit" charge to give you a job.
- Never share an OTP, UPI PIN, card CVV or net banking password. No hiring process needs them.
- Offers sent from free email IDs or only on WhatsApp or Telegram need extra verification.
- If you lose money, call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in quickly.
What do the common scams look like?
| Pattern | What you are told | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Registration or training fee | "Pay Rs 2,500 for ID card and training, refundable after joining." | The refund never comes; the job does not exist |
| Equipment deposit | "Send Rs 15,000 for laptop; it will be adjusted in your first salary." | Deposit stolen |
| WhatsApp or Telegram task jobs | "Earn Rs 3,000 a day liking videos; top up to unlock more." | Early small payouts, then you deposit larger amounts |
| Fake offer letter from a known company | A smart PDF with a famous brand's logo, from a Gmail ID | Real company never sent it |
| Overseas job offers | "Dubai or Europe job, visa fee payable to agent." | Fee taken, no job, sometimes trafficking risk |
| Data harvesting "HR verification" | "Send Aadhaar, PAN and bank details to confirm." | Identity misuse |
Ten-minute checklist before you trust an offer
- Is there a payment anywhere? Registration, training, uniform, laptop, courier, "refundable" deposit. If yes, it is a red flag. Walk away.
- Who sent it? Compare the sender's email domain with the company's official website.
[email protected]is normal;[email protected]is not. Watch for look-alike domains such ascompany-careers.in. - Does the company exist? Look up the legal name on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs site (MCA21 master data) for registered companies, and check that the address and directors look consistent with the website. Not every real employer is a company (proprietorships, partnerships), so a missing MCA record is a prompt to ask more questions, not proof of fraud.
- Did you apply? An unsolicited offer for a role you never applied for is a red flag, especially after only a chat-text interview.
- Was there a real interview? A voice or video conversation with a named person who can explain the role. Hiring completed over text chat in an hour is a warning.
- Does the offer letter hold together? Check designation, CTC, joining date, location and signatory. Compare the company's address and phone number with its official site. Spelling errors, a generic signatory, or CTC wildly above market for your level are warnings. A freshers' package of Rs 12 lakh per annum (LPA) for "no skills required" is the kind of number to question.
- Call the company using a number from its official website, not from the message, and ask HR to confirm the offer.
- Check the recruiter on a professional network: does their profile name the company and have a history?
- Where do documents go? Employers collect Aadhaar, PAN and bank details at onboarding after a real offer, through an HR portal or in person. Do not email them in reply to a first message.
- Pause. Pressure to accept in hours is the tool. A real employer allows time to read an offer.
Overseas job offers need extra care
For jobs abroad, the agent and employer should be verifiable. India's Ministry of External Affairs regulates recruitment agents for emigration through the Protector of Emigrants. Check the agent on the eMigrate portal (https://emigrate.gov.in, checked 2026-10-30). Never pay "visa fees" to an individual's personal account.
If you have already paid or shared data
- Call 1930 (national cyber crime helpline) as fast as possible; 1930 is the financial cyber fraud helpline, and reporting early helps trace or freeze transfers (Ministry of Home Affairs reply to Parliament, https://www.mha.gov.in/MHA1/Par2017/pdfs/par2022-pdfs/RS06042022/3908.pdf, checked 2026-10-30). Other cybercrimes can be reported at cybercrime.gov.in.
- File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with screenshots, transaction IDs, UPI IDs, phone numbers and the offer letter.
- Tell your bank and ask to block the card or UPI handle if you shared details. Change your net banking and UPI PIN.
- If you shared Aadhaar or PAN, watch for unfamiliar loans or accounts and keep copies of your complaint.
- Report the posting to the platform where you saw it.
- Do not pay "recovery agents". They are frequently the same scammers.
Does verification on a platform help?
LiveRec, the job platform for job seekers, employers and recruiters, offers ID verification to job seekers, and verifies business employers with a registration check. The Verified business badge needs a US company registration (an EIN and state, or US registration documents). Companies outside the US, including in India, can post jobs without the badge, so a missing badge is not proof of a scam, and a badge is not proof of a genuine offer either. Verification helps you see who is on the other side, but it cannot stop someone copying a company name in a WhatsApp message. Keep conversations with employers in verified channels and see what a verified employer is.
Switching jobs? Watch your notice period
Scammers sometimes target people who are about to resign. Before you hand in a notice period resignation, confirm the new offer with HR on a phone number you found yourself, and get a signed letter on company letterhead.
Frequently asked questions
Is paying a small refundable deposit ever normal? No. Genuine employers do not take deposits from candidates to hire them. Some training companies charge for courses, but that is a paid course, not a job.
The offer letter has a real company's logo. Is it real? Not necessarily. Logos are easy to copy. Verify by calling HR from the company's official site.
Is a WhatsApp interview always fake? No, many real recruiters use WhatsApp to schedule. The problem is a hiring decision made only by text with a payment or document request.
Where do I report job fraud? Call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in, then inform the job platform and your bank.
Can I get my money back? Sometimes, if you report quickly and the funds can be frozen. There is no guarantee.
