Software engineer salary in Bangalore: how pay is structured

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

We do not publish a salary figure for software engineers in Bangalore, because India has no official city-level source we can cite. What you can control is how you read an offer: compare fixed pay, in-hand pay, variable pay and equity, not the headline CTC. This guide shows how.

Why there is no Bangalore number here

India has no official equivalent of the US wage tables that report pay for an occupation in a named city. Averages that circulate online usually rest on self-reported or scraped postings, which vary by company, level, skill and year. A city average would sound precise and mislead you, and it cannot tell you what a specific employer will pay you. So we do not publish one. Use offers in hand and written pay ranges from employers as your evidence.

How software engineer pay is usually structured

Most offers state a cost to company (CTC): the total the employer budgets for you in a year. Part of it never reaches your bank account monthly. Our CTC vs in-hand guide breaks the pieces down.

PartWhat it meansWhere to read more
Fixed payBasic salary plus allowances such as house rent allowance (HRA), paid every monthCTC vs in-hand
Provident fund (PF)Employee and employer contributions to your PF account, linked to basic payPF and gratuity
GratuityA lump sum payable after qualifying service under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972PF and gratuity
Variable payPerformance-linked, paid on a schedule if conditions are metVariable pay
Joining or retention bonusOne-time payment, may need repayment if you leave earlyVariable pay
ESOPStock options that vest over time. See ESOPGlossary

In-hand pay is what remains after PF, income tax and other deductions. Tax depends on the regime and slabs set by the Income Tax Department; check the current rates on the Income Tax e-filing portal and use the CTC to in-hand salary calculator for a first estimate.

Fixed versus variable

Two offers with the same CTC can pay very differently. A higher fixed share gives you a predictable monthly credit. A higher variable share depends on targets and ratings and may be paid below target. Banks and landlords usually count fixed income, so plan expenses from in-hand fixed pay. More in variable pay in India.

ESOPs and vesting

An employee stock option plan (ESOP) gives you the right to buy company shares at a set price after a vesting period. Vesting means the options become yours step by step over time, and you usually lose unvested options if you leave. Do not treat an ESOP as cash in your CTC unless the letter says how and when it can be turned into money. Ask for the vesting schedule, exercise price, exercise window after you leave, and whether the company is listed.

Notice period buyout as a negotiation point

If you have a notice period at your current job, the cost or timing of leaving can be negotiated with the new employer. Some employers cover a buyout or accept a later joining date, often with a repayment clause if you leave early. See negotiating a notice period and notice period.

Checklist: questions to ask about an offer in Bengaluru

  1. What is the fixed pay, and what is the monthly in-hand amount?
  2. What are basic salary, HRA and special allowance, in rupees?
  3. What percent of CTC is variable, and what was the payout in recent years?
  4. Must I be employed on the payout date to receive it?
  5. What does employer PF cover, and is it inside the CTC?
  6. How is gratuity calculated and when is it payable?
  7. Is there a joining bonus, and when must I repay it?
  8. What is the ESOP grant, vesting schedule, exercise price and exit window?
  9. Will you cover my notice period buyout or accept a later joining date?
  10. Is the offer in writing, with a salary breakup attached?

Then see salary hike negotiation for how to ask. Be careful with any offer that asks you to pay a fee: no genuine employer needs one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the salary of a software engineer in Bangalore? We do not publish a figure because no official city-level source exists. Compare offers by fixed pay, in-hand pay and written terms.

Is CTC the same as my monthly salary? No. CTC includes items such as employer PF and gratuity that are not in your monthly credit.

Is variable pay guaranteed? Not necessarily. It depends on the conditions in your offer letter. Ask for them in writing.

Do I need a Bengaluru-specific tax calculation? State-level deductions, such as professional tax in Karnataka, depend on your salary and state rules, so confirm them with HR or on your salary slip.

Next step

Ask for the full salary breakup in writing, then run it through the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.
