Sales executive interview questions and answers (India)

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

Sales executive interview questions in India test communication, comfort with targets, handling rejection and honesty with customers. Employers often include a role-play such as selling a product on the spot. Prepare short stories with numbers you can stand behind, and show that you listen before you pitch.

At a glance

  • Ask questions first in any role-play, then pitch.
  • Use real numbers from past work or college events.
  • Be clear about field travel and target expectations.
  • Never agree to pay a joining or training fee.

What should you know about the role before the interview?

Sales roles range from inside calling to field visits, and targets, travel and incentives vary by employer, so read the job post and ask. Free job listings and career counselling are offered on the National Career Service portal. The National Career Service portal, run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, states that its services are free of cost and that job seekers should not pay fees to employers (NCS, accessed 31 October 2026). Treat any request for money before an interview or offer as a warning sign.

What sales executive interview questions will you be asked?

1. "Tell me about yourself." A relevant, confident summary.

Sample answer: "I am a BBA graduate who ran sponsorship outreach for our college fest. I enjoy meeting people and solving their needs, and I want a sales career with clear targets."

2. "Why do you want a career in sales?" Motivation beyond incentives.

Sample answer: "I like conversations that end in a clear result. Sales teaches me to understand people, and I am comfortable being measured by targets."

3. "Sell me this pen." Discovery before pitching.

Sample answer: "May I ask what you usually write with and how often? Based on that, I would show the grip, ink quality and price, then ask if it fits your needs."

4. "How do you handle rejection?" Resilience.

Sample answer: "I treat a no as information. I ask politely what held them back, note it, and follow up later if the need may change."

5. "How do you handle a price objection?" Value over discounting.

Sample answer: "I confirm the concern, restate the benefits that matter to them, compare with alternatives honestly, and offer options within my authority."

6. "How would you plan your day or territory?" Self-management.

Sample answer: "I list priority leads, group visits by area to save travel, block time for calls and follow-ups and update my tracker each evening."

7. "What would you do if you were behind on target mid-month?" Accountability.

Sample answer: "I review my pipeline, speak with my manager for ideas, increase quality follow-ups and focus on deals near closing instead of lowering ethics."

8. "Tell me about a time you persuaded someone." Evidence of influence.

Sample answer: "I convinced a local shop to sponsor our event by showing how it would reach students nearby. They agreed to a smaller package, which we later expanded."

9. "Are you comfortable with field travel and long hours?" Honest fit.

Sample answer: "Yes, I have a two-wheeler licence and can travel. I would like to know the territory size and expected visit count so I can plan."

10. "What do you know about our products?" Preparation.

Sample answer: "I read your website and customer reviews. You serve small businesses, and your main strength seems to be quick service. I would like to learn more about onboarding."

How should you prepare?

Practice a two-minute introduction and one role-play with a friend. Research the company's products and customers. Write three stories with numbers: a success, a rejection and a target you chased. Use HR questions for freshers for common general questions.

What should you ask the interviewer?

  • What does the first 90 days of training look like?
  • How are targets set and reviewed?
  • How much field travel is expected?
  • How is the team supported with leads?
