How should I answer the toughest ones?

Why should we hire you?

"I have the core skills you listed: Python, SQL and basic statistics. I applied them in a project that predicted monthly sales from a public dataset, and I presented it to my department. I'm also a quick learner; I picked up Power BI in two weeks for my internship. I'd like to bring that energy and learn from your team."

Notice there is evidence, not adjectives.

What is your weakness?

"I used to be nervous speaking in front of groups. In my final year, I volunteered to present our project updates every week. I'm much more comfortable now, though I still prepare carefully."

Avoid "I am a perfectionist" and avoid weaknesses that kill the job, such as "I cannot work in a team".

Are you open to a service agreement or bond?

Some companies ask freshers to sign a service agreement and pay a sum if they leave early. Answer honestly: "I'd like to see the terms before agreeing. If it's a reasonable period linked to training, I'm open to it." Ask for details in writing: duration, amount, conditions. Do not sign blindly..

What are your salary expectations?

Research the range for the role and your city first. A balanced answer: "I'm looking for a fair fresher package for this role. I'm more interested in learning and growth, but I'd like to understand the fixed pay, variable pay and in-hand salary." If pressed for a number, give a range you can defend. Do not make up market figures. Learn the difference between CTC and in-hand in CTC vs in-hand salary so you can ask good questions.

Do you have other offers?

Be truthful. "Yes, I have one offer from X, and I'm waiting for results from others, but this role is my preference because of Y." If none: "No, I'm currently in the process with a few companies." Do not invent offers to pressure HR.

Why was your score low in one semester?

Give a short reason and the recovery. "My second-year score dipped because I took on too many club activities. I changed my schedule and my last four semesters were consistently higher." No blaming teachers.

When can you join?

If you are in the final semester, give the date after your results or convocation. If you have a notice period at a previous internship or job, state it. Say a specific date, not "anytime", if you can.

What should I ask HR?

  • "What does the training or onboarding look like for the first three months?"
  • "What does the first year look like for freshers in this team?"
  • "How is performance reviewed and how often?"
  • "What is the breakdown of fixed pay, variable pay and benefits in the offer?"
  • "Is there a service agreement, and what are its terms?"
  • "What is the probation period and notice period?"

These questions show maturity and protect you from nasty surprises.

What should I not say?

  • Negative statements about college, teachers or previous employers.
  • "I will do any job" without direction.
  • Unverifiable claims: a skill you have not used, a certificate you do not hold.
  • "Salary is not important." It is fine if it is not your top priority, but say so honestly.
  • Questions about leave or perks before the offer, unless HR raises them.

How do I handle a stress question?

Some interviewers test composure: "Why shouldn't we reject you?" or "You have a low score and no experience; why should we take the risk?" Stay calm, pause, and answer honestly: acknowledge the point, then give a concrete reason for confidence.

"I understand the concern. My score reflects early-year choices, but my project work and internship feedback show I can deliver. I'd be glad to do a short skill test if that helps."

What documents might HR ask for?

Mark sheets, degree or provisional certificate, ID proof, internship letters, PAN and bank details (after the offer, for payroll). Be careful: genuine employers do not ask for money to process your joining. If you are asked for a payment or security deposit for a job, read how to identify fake job offers in India.

How do I close the interview?

Thank each person, restate your interest in one sentence, and ask about next steps. Follow up with a short thank-you message. See our thank-you email template.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the HR round take? Usually 15 to 30 minutes, but it varies. Some companies combine it with the technical round, and some finish it in five minutes if the decision is already made.

Can HR reject me after the technical round was good? Yes. HR can decline on mismatch of salary, location, attitude, availability or red flags in documents. That is why consistent and honest answers matter.

Should I negotiate salary as a fresher? You can ask politely about the structure, and sometimes about joining bonus or review timeline. Fresher packages are often fixed bands, so expect limited flexibility; focus on learning and growth too.

What if I do not know the answer? Say you are not sure, then explain how you would find out. Honest curiosity is better than a confident wrong answer.
