What does a sales executive do?
Sales executives turn interest into orders. A field executive visits shops, homes or businesses in an assigned area. An inside executive calls or messages leads, demonstrates products online and follows up. Both record every contact in the company's system and report against targets.
Typical duties:
- Find and qualify leads.
- Present products and answer questions honestly.
- Negotiate within the limits the company sets.
- Follow up, collect orders and coordinate delivery or onboarding.
- Report calls, visits and results daily.
Education, training and route in
- No licence is needed for most sales roles. A regulated product, for example insurance or financial products, may carry its own authorization rules, so read the job advertisement for that product.
- Employers usually run induction and product training. Treat any request for a training fee as a warning sign.
- The NSDC and sector skill councils publish qualification packs for sales and retail roles. Search the Skill India Digital Hub for current courses.
- Local language fluency is a real advantage in field work.
Skills that matter
Listening, clear explanation, persistence, resilience after a no, time management, basic phone and spreadsheet skills, and honesty about what the product can and cannot do. Field roles may need a two-wheeler and the employer will check the licence for it.
Job outlook
Sales teams exist in nearly every sector, and many employers hire freshers because they train new joiners. The National Career Service lets you filter by sector and location.
How pay is structured
Pay differs by employer, city and experience, so no figures are given here. Ask what part of the offer is fixed, what is variable, and what reaches your bank account each month. Use the CTC to in-hand calculator and the CTC vs in-hand guide to compare offers on take-home pay.
Understanding incentives
Many sales offers combine a fixed amount with incentives tied to targets, plus travel or phone allowances. Ask in writing what is fixed, what depends on targets, how targets are set and when incentives are paid. Incentives that are not guaranteed should not be counted as monthly in-hand pay when you compare offers.
How to get hired
- Prepare a one-minute pitch for any product and practise handling an objection.
- Show proof of any customer-facing work, including part-time jobs and campus drives.
- Ask what a typical new joiner's first quarter looks like.
- Apply through the employer's own site, campus drives, the free National Career Service portal and verified boards. Read fresher job search challenges for common hurdles, and keep your documents ready as the invitation asks.

Beware of fake job offers
A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, uniform, kit or "registration". The National Career Service states that it charges no fee at any stage and that jobseekers should not pay fees to employers; its toll-free helpline is 1514, and cyber fraud can be reported on 1930. Read how to identify fake job offers in India before sharing documents or money.
