Bank PO interview questions and answers (India)

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

Bank PO interview questions test why you chose banking, your awareness of finance and current events, and how you behave with customers and under pressure. The panel looks for clear thinking, honesty and a service attitude. Read the official recruitment notification for the exact stages and weightage, and prepare short, truthful answers.

At a glance

  • Always check the official recruitment notification for the process and marking.
  • Know your resume, graduation subjects and hometown well.
  • Read basic banking and current affairs news weekly.
  • Be honest when you do not know an answer.

What should you know about the role before the interview?

Bank recruitment stages, eligibility and marking differ by bank and year, so rely only on the official notification. Government job and recruitment listings can also be found on the National Career Service portal. That portal, run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, states that its services are free of cost and that job seekers should not pay fees to employers (NCS, accessed 31 October 2026). Treat any request for money before an interview or offer as a warning sign.

What bank PO interview questions will you be asked?

1. "Tell me about yourself." Structure and clear communication.

Sample answer: "I am a commerce graduate from Jaipur. I worked on a college project about small savings and enjoy working with numbers and people, which is why I prepared for banking."

2. "Why do you want to be a bank PO?" Genuine motivation beyond job security.

Sample answer: "Banking touches every family's finances. I want to help customers with credit and savings and grow into branch leadership with responsibility and learning."

3. "What does a bank do, in simple words?" Basic understanding of the sector.

Sample answer: "A bank takes deposits from people and lends the money to those who need it, charging interest on loans and paying interest on deposits, while following regulatory rules."

4. "What is the difference between a savings and a current account?" Core product knowledge.

Sample answer: "A savings account is for individuals to save and earn interest. A current account is for businesses with frequent transactions, usually without interest."

5. "Tell me about a recent banking or economic news item." Awareness and ability to explain it.

Sample answer: "I read that a new digital payment feature was announced. In my view, it helps small shops, though banks must keep security and customer awareness strong."

6. "How would you handle an angry customer waiting in a queue?" Empathy and process.

Sample answer: "I would greet them, apologize for the wait, understand the issue and either solve it or guide them to the right counter, staying calm and polite."

7. "Would you accept a posting far from home?" Willingness to relocate.

Sample answer: "Yes, I understand banks post officers across regions. I will discuss it with my family and I am ready to learn the local language."

8. "How do you handle pressure and targets?" Resilience and ethics.

Sample answer: "I break targets into daily steps and focus on genuine customer needs. I would never mis-sell a product just to meet a number."

9. "What would you do if a senior asked you to bypass a rule?" Integrity.

Sample answer: "I would politely explain the rule, ask for the policy in writing, and escalate to compliance if needed. Following procedure protects the customer and the bank."

10. "Do you have any questions for the panel?" Interest in learning.

Sample answer: "What kind of training is given to new officers in the first year, and how are they rotated across departments?"

How should you prepare?

What should you ask the interviewer?

  • What training do new probationary officers receive?
  • How are postings and rotations decided?
  • What career paths exist after the first few years?
  • How is performance reviewed?
