How to become a bank PO or clerk in India: how recruitment works
To become a bank PO or clerk in India, start at one of two entry points: clerical posts (customer service associates, junior associates) and officer posts (probationary officers or management trainees). Public sector banks recruit mainly through IBPS recruitment processes, and State Bank of India publishes its own openings. Each official notification sets eligibility, age limits and fees.

How to read a bank notification
- Open the notification on the IBPS or SBI website, not on a forwarded image or a third-party site.
- Check the post, the eligibility section, the age limit and the dates.
- Read the selection stages listed; the notification, not a coaching site, is the rule.
- Note the application fee, if any, and pay it only on the official application portal.
- Keep your documents ready: photo, signature and the certificates the notification lists.
Our government job notification guide and eligibility basics walk through the same steps.
Skills that matter
- Accuracy with numbers and records.
- Clear communication with customers in the local language and English or Hindi.
- Reasoning, data interpretation and written English for the selection tests described in each notification.
- Patience, courtesy and care with customer money and information.
Growth
Within a bank, staff typically move up through grades with time, performance and, in some banks, internal exams. Officers can move into branch management, credit, treasury, risk or technology roles. The bank's own service rules decide promotion; the notification and the bank's HR pages explain them.
How pay is structured
Pay depends on the employer, city, experience and the structure of the offer. Offers are usually quoted as annual cost to company (CTC), and the monthly in-hand amount can be much lower once provident fund, taxes and variable components are separated out. No figures are given here because India has no official occupation pay series and we publish only officially sourced numbers. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.
How to get hired
- Register only on official sites. Apply through the official portal named in the notification, never through a middleman.
- Prepare to the syllabus printed in the notification.
- Keep your qualification proof and category certificates, if applicable, ready before the last date.
- Verify any message about a "bank job" against the official site; see fake government job offers.
- Private and small finance banks hire through their own career pages; browse openings on LiveRec at /jobs.
For India-specific context see the India hub.
Beware of fake job offers
A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, a laptop, software or a "registration". Read how to identify fake job offers in India before you share documents or money.
