How do you spot a fake government job offer in India?

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

A government job offer in India is fake if it asks you to pay a person for a post, a result or a seat, reaches you only through a message or a social post, or points to a website that is not the recruiting body's own. Genuine recruitment runs through a published notice, an official portal and a selection process.

At a glance

Summary

  • Recruitment starts with a notice on the recruiter's official site. No notice, no job.
  • You never pay an individual to get selected, change a result or get posted.
  • Real letters can be verified with the issuing office through the official site.
  • If you paid, act quickly: 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in.

What are the red flags of a fake government job offer in India?

Red flagWhy it is a warning
"Pay for a guaranteed seat or post"Selection is through the published process, not payment
Offer reaches you by WhatsApp, Telegram or a callRecruiters publish notices; they do not recruit by chat
A site that looks like UPSC, SSC or a ministry but has a different addressLook-alike sites copy logos
Appointment letter before any exam or interviewSelection requires the stages in the notice
Fee to a personal account or UPI IDOfficial fees go through the official portal
Pressure: "last two seats"Pressure stops you from checking
"Inside contact" or "quota" offersNot part of any published process

How do you verify an offer?

  1. Find the notice yourself on the recruiter's site. See official government job websites.
  2. Compare post names, dates, process and fee with what the message says.
  3. For a letter, contact the issuing office using details from the official site, not from the letter.
  4. Ask whether you appeared in a selection stage. If not, the letter is not real.

For how to read the notice, see how to read a government job notification.

What should you do if you already paid?

Important

Stop all payments. Call 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Tell your bank immediately.

  1. Stop all payments. Do not pay more to "release" the first amount.
  2. Keep screenshots, receipts, numbers and chat history.
  3. Call 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Tell your bank immediately.
  4. Report the suspicious number or message with Sanchar Saathi Chakshu (sancharsaathi.gov.in). Chakshu is for reporting suspected fraud messages, not for recovering money already lost.
  5. File a police complaint in your area if the person is known.

Step-by-step: lost money to job fraud and registration fee scams.

How do these scams usually work?

A group posts a "recruitment" image with a real department's logo. A person says they know someone inside and asks for an advance, then more for "documents", "verification" or "joining". After payment the contact disappears. The pattern repeats in every state; the post names change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a government job? No. Anyone who sells one is committing fraud.

Is a Telegram group official? Only if the recruiter's official site links to it. Even then, it never needs your money.

Can a lawyer or agent help me apply? You can apply yourself, free of agent fees, using the official portal.

Will the police act on a small amount? File anyway. Reports help trace repeat offenders.

Next step: save the official websites list and check every offer against it.
