How does the UPSC recruitment process work in India?

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

The UPSC recruitment process, run by the Union Public Service Commission, fills posts for the Government of India in two ways: through examinations such as the Civil Services Examination, and through recruitment by advertisement for specific posts. The official site, www.upsc.gov.in, lists active examinations, advertisements and the Online Recruitment Application. Read the notice for the exact cycle.

This page explains the process. It does not predict dates or vacancies.

At a glance

  • UPSC examinations and UPSC recruitment advertisements are two different routes with different pages.
  • On the official site, the "Active Examinations" page lists the examinations currently open, for example Civil Services (Preliminary) and Civil Services (Main) Examination for 2026 as of 31 October 2026.
  • Recruitment advertisements for individual posts are on the "Advertisements" page, and applications are made through the Online Recruitment Application (ORA).
  • UPSC does not sell jobs or marks, and no agent can influence a result.

What is the difference between an examination and a recruitment advertisement?

How do you find and read the notice?

  1. Open www.upsc.gov.in yourself. Check the Examination menu (Active Examinations, Forthcoming Examinations, Revised Syllabus and Scheme) and the Recruitment menu (Advertisements, ORA).
  2. Download the full notice. Read eligibility, age as on the stated date, number of attempts if any, fee, the scheme and the dates.
  3. Check the syllabus and scheme under "Revised Syllabus and Scheme" for examinations.
  4. Apply only through the link the notice gives.

The reading method is in how to read a government job notification.

What happens after you apply?

UPSC publishes admit-card, schedule and result notices on its website. Previous question papers, answer keys and cut-off marks are listed under the Examination menu. Watch only the official site for these, not social media posts that look official.

How do you avoid fake UPSC sites and messages?

  • Type the address yourself. Copy-cat sites imitate the logo.
  • A genuine notice never asks you to send money to a person or a personal account.
  • Promises such as "get a UPSC job through a quota" or "pay for a seat" are frauds.

If someone asks for money to "fix" a result, reserve a seat or give you a government job, it is a fraud. If you lose money, call 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. To report a suspicious call, SMS or WhatsApp message, use Sanchar Saathi Chakshu (sancharsaathi.gov.in); Chakshu is for reporting suspected fraud messages, not for recovering money already lost.
