Working in Ireland from India: employment permits explained

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

India focus: jobs in Ireland from India. Checked against the destination government's official pages on 31 October 2026. Always confirm on the official site before you apply.

Jobs in Ireland from India need an employment permit, because Indian citizens are non-EEA nationals unless they are exempt. The Irish Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment administers the permit system. Ireland is not an ECR country, but its permit timelines and scam risks still call for careful planning.

What are the main work permit routes?

The Department says a non-EEA national who is not exempt must hold a valid employment permit to work in Ireland. Under the Employment Permits Act 2024, as amended, nine types of permit can be granted. The ones most relevant to job seekers are:

  • Critical Skills Employment Permit: for highly skilled people in occupations on the Critical Skills Occupations List, such as ICT professionals and professional engineers, and aimed at encouraging permanent residence.
  • General Employment Permit: covers a broad range of occupations. All occupations are eligible unless they are on the Ineligible List of Occupations for Employment Permits.
  • Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit: for senior management, key personnel or trainees moving from an overseas branch of a multinational to its Irish branch.
  • Dependant, Partner or Spouse Employment Permit: for family members of Critical Skills permit holders and some researchers.

The other types cover contract for services, reactivation, internship, sport and culture, and exchange agreements.

What timelines and rules should I plan for?

The Department states that:

  1. An application for any employment permit must be received at least 12 weeks before the proposed employment start date.
  2. A contract of employment signed by both parties must be submitted with each application.
  3. Where a Labour Market Needs Test is required, a EURES job advertisement must have been published for at least 28 days before a valid application can be submitted.
  4. Applications are made on Employment Permits Online, and an application not completed within 28 days of starting is deleted.

Because of the 12 week rule, do not resign from a current job or book travel on the strength of a job offer alone.

What does the Irish Immigration Service do?

The Irish Immigration Service (irishimmigration.ie) handles entry visas, registration and residence. A permit alone does not replace the visa and registration steps, so read both sites.

What are the ECR implications?

Ireland is not named among the designated ECR countries in the MEA's overview dated 21 April 2026, and it does not appear on the MEA's older lists of 17 countries (page last updated 16 May 2016) or its FAQ that cites 17 and 18. The emigration clearance rule therefore does not apply to the trip, though Ireland's own visa rules do. The MEA's own pages give different counts. Its overview dated 21 April 2026 names 19 designated ECR countries, its "Emigration abroad for employment" page (last updated 16 May 2016) lists 17, and its FAQ on issues of intending emigrants uses both 17 and 18 in its text. See the ECR countries list for the full comparison. Check the ECR list and eMigrate before you travel if you hold an ECR passport, and use a verified recruiting agent if you use one.

Scam warning

Never pay anyone who promises an Irish permit, a job or an "approval" for work there. A real employer does not ask you for a visa fee, and an agent can only be trusted after you check the registration yourself (how to check). Read job scam safety for India and how to identify fake job offers in India. If money is already lost, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in. Use Sanchar Saathi Chakshu to report suspected fraud messages and calls; it does not recover money.

How do I search for jobs that state visa sponsorship?

LiveRec job listings cannot be filtered by sponsorship that employers set, so do not rely on a filter. Instead:

  1. Open Find jobs and type the role and Ireland or the city in the search box.
  2. Open each listing and read the full description for the words visa, sponsorship, relocation or work permit.
  3. If the listing is silent, ask the employer in a message before you invest time. See how to message an employer and how to ask about sponsorship.
  4. Save a job alert so new listings for that role and place reach you.

Read the whole listing and the offer letter. A mention of sponsorship in a listing is not a promise of a visa, and a visa is always decided by the destination country's government.
