How to become a software developer in India: routes, skills and first job
To become a software developer in India, you learn to design, write, test and maintain programs. Most start with a B.E./B.Tech, BCA or related degree, but employers hire mainly on demonstrable skills: coding, problem solving and projects. A degree from an AICTE or UGC recognised institution is the common route.

What does a software developer do?
A software developer turns requirements into working code. Work can involve web or mobile applications, back-end services, databases, testing, or maintaining enterprise systems. Roles are titled differently by employer: software engineer, developer, programmer analyst, full-stack developer and so on.
Typical duties:
- Write, review and debug code in languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript or C#.
- Work with teammates and product owners on requirements.
- Build and test features, APIs and database changes.
- Fix bugs and handle production support.
- Document code and follow version control practice.
- Learn new tools as the stack changes.
Education, training and licence route
- AICTE (aicte-india.org) regulates technical education and UGC (ugc.gov.in) regulates universities; check that your institution and programme are recognised.
- Degree routes include B.E./B.Tech in computer science or related branches, BCA, B.Sc computer science, and MCA after a bachelor's degree. Diplomas and short courses can help but should lead to real projects.
- The National Skill Development Corporation and the IT-ITeS sector skill council publish job-role qualification packs for IT roles. Search the Skill India Digital Hub for current courses.
- No government licence is needed to work as a developer. Employers set their own tests and interviews.
Skills that matter
Programming fundamentals, data structures and algorithms, databases, version control (Git), debugging, writing clear code, and communication with non-technical colleagues. Practise through projects you can show, such as a deployed web app or an open-source contribution.

Job outlook
Software skills are used across sectors, from IT services to banking and public services, and employers regularly revise the skills they ask for. Keeping your skills current is part of the job.
How pay is structured
Developer offers usually show a CTC made of fixed pay, variable pay, retirement contributions and benefits. In-hand pay is less than CTC because of provident fund, tax and other deductions. Compare offers on the monthly in-hand amount and the notice period, not the headline total.
No figures are given here because we only use official sources and pay differs by employer, city and experience. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.
