What does an electrician do?

An electrician works with power supply, wiring, switchgear, motors and appliances. Some work in homes and buildings, others in factories or on maintenance teams. Safety is central: the work involves live circuits, working at height and following earthing and protection rules.

Typical duties:

  • Read wiring diagrams and plan cable routes.
  • Install and test wiring, lighting and distribution boards.
  • Find and repair faults in motors, panels and appliances.
  • Follow safety practice, including isolation and use of protective equipment.
  • Maintain tools and record work done.
  • Work with supervisors, engineers and other trades.

Education, training and licence route

  1. Industrial Training Institutes train for trades such as Electrician under the Craftsmen Training Scheme run by the Directorate General of Training (DGT, dgt.gov.in); trainees are assessed by NCVT. Course duration and entry education are set in the current admission notice, so check your state ITI admission portal before you apply.
  2. Apprenticeship training with an employer builds practical skill and is part of the skilling system. Details are on the Skill India Digital Hub.
  3. NSDC and the relevant sector skill councils publish qualification packs for electrical roles. Check the Skill India Digital Hub for the current qualification pack.
  4. Some states require a wireman permit or contractor licence from the state electrical licensing board for particular installations. Rules differ by state, so check your state board before taking independent contracts.

Skills that matter

Reading circuit diagrams, safe working habits, fault finding, using multimeters and tools, basic arithmetic for loads, patience and attention to detail. Learning about solar installations, automation or electric vehicles can broaden work.

Job outlook

Buildings, factories, utilities and the energy transition all need electrical work, and employers value certified, safety-trained workers.

How pay is structured

Electricians may be paid daily, monthly or per job. Salaried posts may include overtime, shift or site allowances, and some employers provide provident fund and insurance. If self-employed, income follows contracts. Ask what is fixed and what depends on attendance. See CTC vs in-hand.

No figures are given here because we only use official sources and pay differs by employer, city and experience. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.

How to get hired

  • Keep your ITI and NCVT certificates and apprenticeship records.
  • List the equipment and sites you have worked on.
  • Ask about safety equipment, insurance and working hours before accepting.
  • Apply to contractors, factories, housing societies and verified job boards.
  • Do not pay a "deposit" or "visa fee" for overseas electrician jobs without checking official channels.
