Web developer in India: skills, training and how to get hired

What does a web developer do?
Front-end developers build what users see and click. Back-end developers build the server logic, databases and integrations behind it. Full-stack developers do both. Many smaller companies need someone who can maintain a site, fix bugs and make content updates.
Typical duties:
- Turn designs into working pages.
- Write and test code for forms, navigation and data.
- Make sites work on phones and different browsers.
- Fix bugs and keep the site fast and secure.
- Work with designers, testers and product teams.
If you want a broader software role, see the software developer guide.
Training and route in
- No licence is needed. Employers ask for skills, so build and finish several small sites: a portfolio page, a form that saves data, a small shop or booking page.
- Skill India Digital Hub and NSDC list training and qualification packs; search for current web development and IT courses.
- Put your code in a public repository with a short readme for each project.
- Apply for internships and junior roles, and take a practical test seriously.
Skills that matter
HTML, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals, a modern framework, version control, debugging, reading documentation, accessibility basics, and clear written communication. Back-end roles add a server language and database skills.
Job outlook
Businesses of all sizes need websites and web apps, so openings appear across IT and non-IT employers. The National Career Service lists IT and communication as a job sector you can search.
How pay is structured
Pay differs by employer, city and experience, so no figures are given here. Ask what part of the offer is fixed, what is variable, and what reaches your bank account each month. Use the CTC to in-hand calculator and the CTC vs in-hand guide to compare offers on take-home pay.

Beware of fake job offers
A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, uniform, kit or "registration". The National Career Service states that it charges no fee at any stage and that jobseekers should not pay fees to employers; its toll-free helpline is 1514, and cyber fraud can be reported on 1930. FAQ
Do I need a degree to be a web developer?
Not always. Many employers hire on skills and projects, though some require a degree. Read each advertisement.
How long does it take to learn web development?
It varies by person and time spent. A focused learner can build simple sites within months, but job-ready skill needs several finished projects.
Should a fresher learn front end or back end first?
Front end is a common start because you see results quickly, then add back-end skills.
