Accountant interview questions and answers
Accountant interview questions test technical knowledge, accuracy, controls and communication. Expect questions about reconciliations, month-end close, journal entries, spreadsheets and ethics, plus how you explain numbers to non-accountants. Bring specific examples with the size of the task, your process and the result, and be honest about the systems and standards you have actually used.
At a glance
- Show process, accuracy and controls before speed.
- Quantify the work: accounts, close days, volumes.
- Be specific about software and standards you have used.
- Prepare an ethics or error story.
What should you know about the role before the interview?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree, typically in accounting or a related field, as the usual requirement for accountants, with no experience or on-the-job training required. It states that CPA licensing is issued by state boards, requires a national exam and that all states require 150 semester hours of coursework (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 29 October 2026, accessed 31 October 2026).
What accountant interview questions will you be asked?
1. "Walk me through your month-end close process." Process knowledge and ownership.
Sample answer: "I reconcile bank and subledgers, post accruals and adjusting entries, review the trial balance for variances, then hand the package to the controller. I keep a checklist with owners and due dates."
2. "How do you reconcile an account that will not balance?" Systematic troubleshooting.
Sample answer: "I isolate the period, compare totals, look for transposition or timing differences, trace large items, then smaller ones. I document the cause and the fix."
3. "What is the difference between accrual and cash accounting?" Fundamentals.
Sample answer: "Accrual records revenue and expenses when earned or incurred, while cash records them when money moves. Accrual gives a better picture of performance, which is why most companies use it for reporting."
4. "Describe a time you found an error. What did you do?" Honesty and corrective action.
Sample answer: "I found a duplicate vendor payment during a reconciliation. I told my supervisor, recovered the amount and added a duplicate-invoice check to the process."
5. "How do you make sure your work is accurate?" Controls and review habits.
Sample answer: "I use checklists, tie out to source documents, review my own work after a break and ask for a second review on entries that are large or unusual."
6. "What accounting software and Excel skills do you have?" Honest skill level.
Sample answer: "I use two ERP systems daily and Excel for lookups, pivot tables and reconciliations. I am less experienced with advanced macros but learn quickly."
7. "How would you handle pressure from a manager to book an entry you think is wrong?" Ethics.
Sample answer: "I explain the issue with the standard or documentation behind it and offer a compliant alternative. If it continues, I escalate through the proper channel."
8. "How do you explain financial results to non-accountants?" Communication.
Sample answer: "I lead with the headline, use plain words and one chart, and link each variance to a business cause. I check that they know what action to take."
9. "How do you prioritize at quarter or year end?" Time management.
Sample answer: "I list deadlines by dependency, do the work that others need first, communicate early about risks and avoid last-minute entries by prepping schedules during the quarter."
10. "Why do you want to work in accounting?" Motivation.
Sample answer: "I enjoy puzzles and getting to a number I can stand behind. I like being the person teams trust to confirm that things add up."
How should you prepare?
Make a short list of systems, standards and volumes you have handled. Prepare one error story and one process improvement with numbers. Review the job post for the focus, such as payables or audit, and practice walking through a close or reconciliation in two minutes. Use Tell me about yourself for your opener.
What should you ask the interviewer?
- What does the close calendar look like?
- Which systems does the team use?
- How are controls and reviews handled?
- What support exists for CPA exam study or continuing education?
