How to answer "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" in an interview

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

Interviewers ask about your strengths and weaknesses to see self-awareness. A strong interview answer names one or two strengths that matter for the job and backs each with a short example. For a weakness, choose a real, minor one that is not central to the role, and say what you are doing to improve. Avoid disguised boasts.

At a glance

  • Strength: relevant, specific, supported by an example.
  • Weakness: real, manageable, with action taken.
  • Keep each answer to about 45 seconds.
  • Never choose a weakness that is a core requirement of the job.
  • Do not say "I work too hard".

Strengths: structure

  1. Name it.
  2. Give a short example.
  3. Link it to the role.

Example: "I am good at explaining complex things simply. At my last job I wrote a one-page guide to our reporting process that new staff used, and it cut the questions I got. That would help in this role, where you work with non-specialists."

Weaknesses: structure

  1. Name it plainly.
  2. Say how it showed up.
  3. Explain what you have done and what has improved.

Example: "I used to take on too many tasks instead of asking for help. After missing a deadline, I started listing my commitments weekly and speaking up early. My last three projects were delivered on time."

Choosing a strengths and weaknesses interview answer

Role typeStrengths to considerWeaknesses that are safer
SupportPatience, clarityTaking time to switch off after hard calls
AnalystAccuracy, curiosityPresenting to large groups
ManagerListening, planningDelegating details

Avoid

  • Clichés ("perfectionist").
  • Real flaws that disqualify you, such as poor honesty.
  • A long list.
  • Blaming others.

How to choose the right strength

Look at the job post and underline the skills it repeats. Official occupation descriptions can also help you find the language of a field. For example, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, as accessed 31 October 2026, lists analytical, communication and problem-solving skills as important qualities for data scientists. Pick a strength that appears in your job post, then prove it with one short example.

Step by step: build your answer

  1. List five things you are praised for at work or school.
  2. Circle the two that match the job post.
  3. For each, write a one-sentence example with a result.
  4. Choose one weakness that is real, minor and fixable, such as asking for help late or presenting to large groups.
  5. Write what you did and what changed.
  6. Practise until each part takes about 20 seconds.

More examples

Strength (customer role): "I stay calm when someone is upset. At my last job I took over a case a coworker handed off and the customer thanked us in writing."

Strength (technical role): "I document my work. When I left a project, the next person said the notes saved them time."

Weakness (honest and fixable): "I used to hesitate to say no to extra requests. Now I check my priorities with my manager before taking on more, and I have met my deadlines since."

Replace each example with your own facts.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a strength you cannot prove.
  • Naming a weakness that is a core part of the job.
  • Using a "weakness" that is secretly a strength.
  • Saying "I have no weaknesses".
  • Speaking for two minutes. Keep it short.
  • Blaming others for your weakness.

Different ways interviewers ask

The question may come as "What would your manager say about you?", "What do you want to improve?" or "What feedback have you received?" The structure is the same: name it, give an example, show action.
