Walk-in interview in India: what to carry and how to check it is genuine

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

A walk-in interview is a hiring event where candidates come to a venue on a stated date and time and are interviewed without a prior appointment. Verify the company and the venue before you travel, carry your documents, and pay nothing at the venue.

At a glance

  • Confirm the company, date, time and address from the company's own website or HR, not only from a forwarded poster.
  • A genuine walk-in does not charge for registration, forms or the interview.
  • Go to the company's office or a known public venue. Tell someone where you are going.
  • Be ready for tests, a short interview and an on-the-spot document check.

How do I check a walk-in drive is genuine?

  1. Find the company's official website and look for the same drive on its careers page.
  2. Call the company's HR number from that website and ask if the drive is real.
  3. Check the venue address. Be careful with a private flat, a hotel room or a place that changes at the last minute.
  4. Refuse to pay any registration, training or "ID card" fee. Read how to identify fake job offers in India.

How should I prepare for a walk-in interview?

Prepare a short introduction, your projects or work history, and your salary and notice period answers. See fresher interview questions. Reach early; queues are common. After the interview, ask when you will hear back and keep the contact name.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to apply before a walk-in? Not always. Some drives ask you to register online; follow the company's own instructions.

What if I am asked to pay at the venue? Leave. If you have paid, call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in.

Before you leave home: a checklist

  • Read the notice again. Does it name the company, address, date, time and a contact person?
  • Look up the company on its own website and call a number you found there.
  • Tell a family member or friend the address and the time you expect to return.
  • Plan the route and arrive early.
  • Carry copies, not originals, unless the notice says to bring originals for verification.

Step by step on the day

  1. Check that the venue matches the notice. A change of venue at the last minute is a reason to pause.
  2. Do not pay anything at the gate or the desk. The National Career Service says job seekers should not pay fees to employers.
  3. Fill the application form with the details in your resume.
  4. Keep your phone, wallet and documents with you.
  5. Ask for the name and role of each interviewer and note the next step.
  6. If you are asked to sign an offer or a bond on the spot, ask for a copy and time to read it. See fake offer letters.

Common mistakes

  • Going to a drive that has no named company.
  • Handing over original certificates without a written receipt.
  • Sharing OTPs, bank details or your Aadhaar number. See Aadhaar, PAN and bank details.
  • Not telling anyone where you are.
  • Paying for a "walk-in pass", a "form" or "training."

If something goes wrong

If you receive a suspicious call or message about a drive, report the sender on Chakshu through the Sanchar Saathi portal. If you have lost money, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. See where to report job fraud.
