How do I know if a job offer in India is fake?
India: official channels as of 30 Oct 2026. Official links checked on 30 October 2026.
A fake job offer in India usually arrives unasked by WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS or email, promises good pay for easy work and soon asks you to pay money or share documents. If a stranger offers a job you never applied for and asks for money, stop replying and check before you do anything else.
Common signs of a fake job offer in India
- You did not apply, yet you are "selected".
- Pay is high and the work is simple, such as typing from home or liking posts.
- The recruiter will only talk on WhatsApp or Telegram, and uses a personal number.
- A fee is asked for registration, training, a kit or "security". See registration fee scams.
- The email comes from a free mailbox, or from a domain that only looks like the company's.
- The offer arrives with no interview, or after a chat-only interview.
Five checks before you reply
- Open the company's real website by typing the address. Look for the job on its careers page.
- Compare the email domain with the website, letter by letter.
- Call or write the company's published HR contact and ask if the recruiter and job are real.
- Search the company and recruiter name with words such as "fraud" and "complaint".
- Ask a family member or friend to look at the message with you.
More: verify an employer, fake HR on WhatsApp and Telegram, fake offer letters.
If you have already replied
Replying is not a loss on its own. If you paid or shared documents, go to lost money to a job fraud. To report suspicious calls or messages, see how to report.
FAQ
Can real companies use WhatsApp for hiring? Some do, for scheduling. They still never ask for money, and you can confirm them through the company's own channels.
Do I name the company in a complaint? Give the name that was used, but remember the scammer may be impersonating a real firm.
What official sources say
- The National Career Service (NCS) says on its portal that it does not charge any fee at any stage of registration, job application or interview processing, and that job seekers should not pay fees to employers. It lists blacklisted entities on its site and gives a toll-free helpline, 1514. For cyber fraud it points to 1930.
- Sanchar Saathi's Chakshu service lists fake job, lottery and loan offers among the kinds of calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages that can be reported.
If the offer uses a government name
Some fake offers claim to come from the National Career Service, the Ministry of Labour and Employment or another department. The NCS says that some websites and individuals falsely claim an association and use its logo, and tells people to verify information only on its official website. Type the address yourself rather than using a link from a message.

Common mistakes
- Replying "yes" to see what happens. A reply confirms your number is active.
- Clicking a "confirm your selection" link.
- Paying a small amount to "lock" the job.
- Sending identity documents before the offer is confirmed through the company's website.
- Assuming a stamp, signature or logo makes a letter real. See fake offer letters.
