Order a background check on a candidate

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

US federal rules as of 30 Oct 2026.

To order a background check, open the candidate's Verification tab and choose Run background check. Pick the package, confirm the candidate's location and certify, then choose Run background check again. The candidate is invited to a secure consent form; nothing runs until they consent, and the request expires after 7 days without consent. Ordering needs an active plan.

Status shows on the Verification tab and under Background checks in the left-hand menu.

Steps

  1. Open the candidate and choose the Verification tab.
  2. In the Background check card choose Run background check.
  3. Pick the Package, confirm the Candidate location (and the job's US state for US checks), and tick the certification.
  4. Choose Run background check. The status becomes Waiting for consent.
  5. The candidate reads the disclosure, gives their details and signs.
  6. Follow status on the Verification tab. If consent is pending you can choose Send reminder (one per 24 hours, up to three).

Good to know

  • Checkr screens people. Company verification is separate (EIN and state of registration).
  • Background-check prices are not listed here; see Subscriptions & billing after you sign in.
  • Only a company owner, admin, recruiter or hiring manager can order a check.
  • Candidate consent text and disclosure are the approved bgv consent texts.
  • Without a plan the Run background check button is off and the card tells you to choose a plan.
  • A candidate can have only one check in progress at a time.
