Tally skills for accounts jobs in India: what to put on your CV

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

Tally is accounting software that many small and medium Indian businesses use for invoicing, books, inventory and GST returns. Its maker, Tally Solutions, sells it as TallyPrime. On your CV, name the version and the tasks you did, such as entering vouchers or preparing GST returns, instead of writing only "Tally".

What is Tally used for?

Tally Solutions describes TallyPrime as business software for small and medium businesses in India. Its page lists invoicing and accounting, GST return workflows (GSTR-1 upload, GSTR-3B, e-invoicing and e-way bill generation), inventory tracking across multiple godowns, and banking and cash flow features.

For an accounts executive or a fresher, this means day-to-day work such as recording purchase and sales vouchers, tracking stock and preparing data for GST returns. Which of these a job includes depends on the employer, so read the posting.

Which jobs use it?

Accounts and bookkeeping roles in small and medium businesses are the usual home for Tally. Read our accountant career guide for India for routes into accounts work without CA, and the chartered accountant guide for the CA route. The general skill is covered in bookkeeping.

How do I show Tally on a CV?

  • Write the tool as the posting does, for example "TallyPrime", with the tasks: vouchers, ledgers, bank reconciliation, stock entries.
  • Say which GST tasks you did, such as preparing return data, only if you did them. See GST filing skills.
  • Do not include real employer or client figures.
  • Add a course by its exact name and issuer only if you completed it.
  • Use the exact skill words so employers can find you, as in which skills to put on a profile. On LiveRec, employers see up to five of your skills on your card, with the ones matching the job first.

Where can I learn it?

Two official bodies run skilling in India. The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) was established in 2008 as a public-private partnership under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The Skill India Digital Hub is the government platform for upskilling, reskilling and lifelong learning. We could not verify a specific Tally course on either site on 31 October 2026, so check their catalogues directly for accounting courses and confirm what the certificate covers before you pay for anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tally enough to get an accounts job? It is one common tool. Postings also ask for accounting knowledge, Excel and GST basics. Read the postings you want and match them honestly.

Do I need a certificate to list Tally? No rule requires one. A completed course or a practical example you can explain is stronger than a bare keyword.

Is Tally the same as GST filing? No. Tally can support GST return workflows, but filing is done through the GST portal. See our GST filing skills guide.
