What does a chartered accountant do?

A chartered accountant is a finance professional whose title is protected by the Chartered Accountants Act. CAs work in three broad settings: in public practice (audit, tax, advisory for clients), in industry (finance, treasury, costing, reporting for one employer) and in government or public sector bodies. Freshers often begin as audit or tax assistants, then move toward senior roles with experience.

Typical duties:

  • Prepare, review and analyse financial statements.
  • Plan and carry out statutory and internal audits.
  • Handle income tax, GST and other tax filings and notices.
  • Advise on company compliance, budgeting and cost control.
  • Support management with financial analysis and risk review.
  • Guide junior staff and articled trainees.

Education, training and licence route

  1. ICAI's Chartered Accountancy Course page names three stages: the Foundation Course, the Intermediate Course and the Final Course. ICAI also lists a "New Scheme of Education and Training" dated 1 July 2023 on its Board of Studies page.
  2. Durations, eligibility, exam schedule, syllabus and the rules for practical training (commonly called articleship) are set by ICAI and change over time. Check the current prospectus and FAQs on icai.org before planning.
  3. After clearing the examinations and completing the required training, you apply for membership of ICAI. Only members may use the CA designation and, with a certificate of practice, sign audits.
  4. Be careful of coaching or "guaranteed pass" claims. The ICAI website is the only authority on eligibility and results.

Skills that matter

Accounting standards, tax law, audit method, Excel and accounting software, attention to detail, ethical judgement, written reports and client communication. CA work involves deadlines around tax and reporting dates, so time management matters.

Job outlook

Demand for audit, tax, GST and compliance skills follows company and regulatory activity, and employers in practice and industry both recruit newly qualified members. Check ICAI placement information and company careers pages.

How pay is structured

A CA offer from a firm or company usually combines fixed pay with allowances, and sometimes variable pay or a bonus. Articled trainees receive a stipend set by the ICAI scheme; look at the current ICAI rules. For employed CAs, read the CTC breakup carefully, because a large total can include components that do not reach your bank account each month.

No figures are given here because we only use official sources and pay differs by employer, city and experience. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.

How to get hired

  • Keep your articleship record and certificates organised.
  • Show tools you have used: tax portals, accounting packages, Excel.
  • Target audit firms, company finance teams and banks that recruit through campus or ICAI-linked channels.
  • Prepare to discuss a live case: a reconciliation, a notice reply or an audit finding.
  • Verify the firm or company exists before sharing documents.

Beware of fake job offers

A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, uniform, kit or "registration". Read how to identify fake job offers in India before sharing documents or money.
