What does an accountant do?

An accountant keeps the books accurate. In a small business one person may handle everything; in a larger company, work is split into payables, receivables, payroll, general ledger, taxation and reporting. Titles include accounts executive, accounts assistant, junior accountant and senior accountant.

Typical duties:

  • Record sales, purchases, receipts and payments.
  • Match bank statements with the books and clear differences.
  • Prepare invoices, vouchers and monthly closing schedules.
  • Support tax filings and audit requests with the right documents.
  • Prepare reports on costs, budgets and cash flow.

Education and qualification routes

  1. Degree. A B.Com or a similar graduate degree is the common start. Confirm that the university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  2. Cost and management accountancy. The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) is a professional body for cost and management accountants. Read its student pages for current eligibility, stages and registration steps.
  3. Chartered accountancy. If you later decide to pursue CA, read how to become a chartered accountant in India. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) publishes the rules.
  4. Practical skills. Learn double-entry bookkeeping, a widely used accounting package and spreadsheets.

Skills that matter

  • Accuracy and attention to small differences.
  • Double-entry bookkeeping and reading a trial balance.
  • Spreadsheets: lookups, pivot tables and reconciliations.
  • Understanding of indirect and direct tax basics, as required by the employer.
  • Clear records and an audit trail for every entry.
  • Confidentiality with business and personal financial data.

Growth and job outlook

Accountants commonly move to senior accountant, finance executive, accounts manager and finance controller roles. Adding a professional qualification, such as the CMA route, can support moves into costing, budgeting and management reporting. Banks, manufacturers, trading firms, schools and small businesses all hire accounts staff, and government departments post accounts posts with their own eligibility.

How pay is structured

Pay depends on the employer, city, experience and the structure of the offer. Offers are usually quoted as annual cost to company (CTC), and the monthly in-hand amount can be much lower once provident fund, taxes and variable components are separated out. No figures are given here because India has no official occupation pay series and we publish only officially sourced numbers. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.
