What does a data analyst do?

A data analyst turns raw records into answers. A sales team may ask why orders fell in one region; a bank may ask which customers miss payments. The analyst pulls the data, fixes errors and duplicates, runs the analysis and presents the finding in plain language. Job titles vary: business analyst, MIS executive, reporting analyst and operations analyst often overlap with the data analyst role, so read the duties in each posting rather than the title.

Typical duties:

  • Write queries to extract data from databases.
  • Clean and combine data from spreadsheets, files and internal systems.
  • Build dashboards and recurring reports for managers.
  • Spot trends, errors and unusual changes, and explain likely causes.
  • Present findings to non-technical teams.

Education and learning route

  1. Degree. Many postings ask for a bachelor's degree in any stream, with commerce, mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science and engineering common. Check that your university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on the UGC website.
  2. Skills. Courses and skilling programmes are listed on the Skill India Digital Hub and by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Pick a course that ends in a project you can show, not only a certificate.
  3. Practice. Work on public datasets and write up what you found.
  4. First role. Many people start as MIS executive, reporting executive or junior analyst and move up as their SQL and reporting skills grow.

Skills that matter

  • Spreadsheets: formulas, lookups, pivot tables and charts.
  • SQL: filtering, joins, grouping and subqueries.
  • One reporting or visualization tool, and the habit of labeling charts clearly.
  • Basic statistics: averages, spread, sampling and the difference between correlation and cause.
  • Python or R becomes useful for larger or repeated analysis.
  • Plain writing: one clear paragraph on what changed and what to do about it.

Build a portfolio

A short portfolio is the strongest signal for a fresher. Include two or three projects, each with the question, the data source, your cleaning steps, the result and what you would do next. Keep the files public and the explanation short. Use only data you are allowed to share; never publish a past employer's records.

Growth and job outlook

With experience, analysts move into senior analyst, analytics manager, product analytics, data engineering or data science paths. Demand shows up across sectors, so look at the skills in live postings and match your projects to them. Government departments and public sector banks also post analytical and IT roles; read each notification's eligibility section.

How pay is structured

Pay depends on the employer, city, experience and the structure of the offer. Offers are usually quoted as annual cost to company (CTC), and the monthly in-hand amount can be much lower once provident fund, taxes and variable components are separated out. No figures are given here because India has no official occupation pay series and we publish only officially sourced numbers. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.
