What does a graphic designer do?
A graphic designer turns a brief into visuals that communicate. You may design social media creatives, logos, brochures, banners, presentations, packaging or email graphics. You work with copywriters, marketers and clients, take feedback, and deliver files in the right sizes and formats.
Typical duties:
- Understand the brief, audience and brand guidelines.
- Create layouts, typography and color treatments.
- Revise designs after feedback.
- Prepare files for print or digital use.
- Keep work organized and on schedule.
Training and route in
- No licence is needed. Many designers hold a degree or diploma in design, while others learn through courses and practice.
- The Skill India Digital Hub and NSDC list courses and qualification packs; search for current design and creative media options.
- Build a portfolio of three to five finished projects that show your process, not just final images. Mock briefs for imaginary brands are fine if you label them as practice.
- Add internships or small freelance projects to show you can work to a deadline.
Skills that matter
Typography, layout, color, image editing, attention to detail, receiving feedback calmly, time management, and clear explanation of why you made a choice. Basic understanding of print and digital file formats helps.
Job outlook
Brands of every size need visuals, so openings appear in agencies, companies and media. Many designers also freelance. The National Career Service lets you search by sector and location.
How pay is structured
Pay differs by employer, city and experience, so no figures are given here. Ask what part of the offer is fixed, what is variable, and what reaches your bank account each month. Use the CTC to in-hand calculator and the CTC vs in-hand guide to compare offers on take-home pay.
Freelance and test tasks
Some employers ask for a short design test. A reasonable test is limited in time and uses practice material. Be careful if a company asks for unpaid full-scale work, such as a finished logo or campaign, before hiring. Genuine employers do not charge you to apply.
How to get hired
- Share a portfolio link in your resume, with short notes on each project.
- Ask in interviews how work is reviewed and who gives feedback.
- Keep source files and credit shared work properly.
- Apply through the employer's own site, campus drives, the free National Career Service portal and verified boards. Read fresher job search challenges for common hurdles, and keep your documents ready as the invitation asks.

Beware of fake job offers
A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, uniform, kit or "registration". The National Career Service states that it charges no fee at any stage and that jobseekers should not pay fees to employers; its toll-free helpline is 1514, and cyber fraud can be reported on 1930.
