Pharmacy technician interview questions and answers

Expect questions about checking prescriptions, catching errors, insurance issues and upset customers. What should you know about the role before the interview?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for pharmacy technicians, with moderate-term on-the-job training of less than a year. It states that most states regulate pharmacy technicians, which may require an exam or training program, and that some states and employers require certification (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026, accessed 31 October 2026).
What pharmacy technician interview questions will you be asked?
1. "Why do you want to be a pharmacy technician?" Motivation.
Sample answer: "I like detail work and helping people get what they need to feel better. I want to support patients and the pharmacist with accuracy and kindness."
2. "How do you make sure a prescription is filled accurately?" Process.
Sample answer: "I verify patient name, drug, strength, quantity and directions against the prescription, check the label and bottle at each step and have the pharmacist do the final check."
3. "What would you do if you noticed an error after filling?" Honesty.
Sample answer: "I tell the pharmacist immediately, stop the medication from leaving and follow the incident process. I think about which check I missed."
4. "How do you handle a customer who is upset about a wait or insurance rejection?" De-escalation.
Sample answer: "I listen, apologize and explain what I am doing. I check the claim, contact the insurer or the prescriber and offer options. I involve the pharmacist if needed."
5. "How do you protect patient privacy?" HIPAA habits.
Sample answer: "I share information only with the patient or authorized people, verify identity, keep screens private and lower my voice at the counter."
6. "What would you do if a customer asked about side effects?" Scope awareness.
Sample answer: "I do not give clinical advice. I connect them to the pharmacist right away and note the question."
7. "What pharmacy software and systems have you used?" Skills.
Sample answer: "I have used a retail dispensing system for data entry, billing and inventory, and I learn new software quickly."
8. "How do you handle a busy pharmacy with phones and lines?" Prioritizing.
Sample answer: "I serve urgent items first, communicate wait times and divide tasks with my team. I keep my area organized."
9. "What is your certification or registration status?" Compliance.
Sample answer: "I am registered in my state and certified. I keep my renewals current and will provide documents."
10. "Tell me about working in a team." Collaboration.
Sample answer: "I coordinated with the pharmacist and another tech to clear a backlog, splitting data entry and filling. We finished on time without errors."
How should you prepare?
Gather your registration or certification details and keep them handy. Prepare stories about catching an error, a difficult customer and teamwork, with no patient identifiers. Review your state's rules on what technicians may do so you can answer scope questions plainly, and look up the pharmacy's type, such as retail, hospital or mail order, so your examples fit. What should you ask the interviewer?
- What is the mix of retail, drive-thru and compounding work?
- What training will I receive?
- How is the pharmacist-technician team organized?
- What are the schedule and weekend expectations?
