Staff nurse interview questions and answers (India)
Staff nurse interview questions in India test patient safety, infection control, emergency response, documentation and teamwork. Hospitals also ask about your registration and shift availability. Answer with real clinical examples from training or work, keep patient details private, and be honest about the procedures you have performed independently.
At a glance
- Carry your registration and training documents.
- Describe clinical examples without patient names.
- Be honest about procedures done under supervision.
- Ask about nurse-patient ratios and shift rotation.
What should you know about the role before the interview?
The Indian Nursing Council is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, set up under the Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947 to establish a uniform standard of training for nurses, midwives and health visitors, and it runs the Nurses Registration and Tracking System (INC website, accessed 31 October 2026). Confirm registration requirements with your State Nursing Council.
What staff nurse interview questions will you be asked?
1. "Why did you choose nursing?" Genuine motivation.
Sample answer: "I saw a nurse comfort my grandmother in hospital and realized care is as important as treatment. I want to give that kind of steady support."
2. "How do you ensure patient safety?" Safety habits.
Sample answer: "I verify patient identity, check the medicine, dose and time before giving it, follow handwashing rules and report any concern immediately."
3. "How do you prevent infection?" Basic infection control.
Sample answer: "Hand hygiene at the right moments, correct use of gloves and masks, clean equipment, safe disposal of waste and isolation steps when needed."
4. "What would you do if a patient's condition suddenly worsened?" Emergency judgment.
Sample answer: "I check airway, breathing and circulation, call for the doctor and the emergency team, stay with the patient, record vitals and document actions."
5. "What would you do if you noticed a medication error?" Honesty.
Sample answer: "I would make sure the patient is safe first, inform the doctor and my in-charge immediately and complete the incident report without hiding anything."
6. "How do you handle an anxious patient or family?" Communication.
Sample answer: "I explain what is happening in simple language, listen to their worries, involve the doctor for medical questions and keep my tone calm."
7. "Which procedures have you done independently?" Accurate skill picture.
Sample answer: "I have done vital signs, IV cannulation and dressings under supervision during training. I need supervised practice before independent central line care."
8. "How do you document care?" Accuracy.
Sample answer: "I record promptly and clearly, in the format the hospital uses, with times, observations and actions, and never write for something I did not do."
9. "How do you cope with night shifts and long hours?" Honest availability.
Sample answer: "I plan sleep and meals, take breaks as allowed and speak up early if fatigue could affect safety. I can work rotating shifts."
10. "Where do you see yourself in a few years?" Fit with growth.
Sample answer: "I want to build experience in critical care, complete any further training the hospital supports, and help train new nurses."
How should you prepare?
Revise vital signs, infection control and emergency steps. Prepare three stories: a safety catch, an emergency and a difficult family. Remove identifying details. Review your documents and registration, and read the unit description in the job post so you can match your examples to it. Practice an introduction with how to introduce yourself as a fresher.
What should you ask the interviewer?
- What is the nurse-patient ratio on this unit?
- How does orientation work for new nurses?
- How are shifts rotated?
- What learning support does the hospital offer?
