Part-time jobs in India: what to know before you start

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

A part-time job in India is paid work for fewer hours than a full-time role, such as evening shifts, weekends or a few days a week. A genuine employer pays you; you never pay to get the work. Confirm the hours, the pay and who pays you in writing before your first shift.

At a glance

  • Real part-time work never asks for a registration fee, deposit or "kit" charge.
  • Ask for hours, pay rate, pay date and the employer's legal name in writing.
  • Part-time earnings are income. Keep records for your tax return.
  • Task jobs on WhatsApp or Telegram that ask you to deposit money are a common scam.

What kinds of part-time work exist?

TypeHow it usually works
Shift-based work (retail, support, tele-calling)Fixed hours, paid by the employer on a set date
Tutoring and teachingPaid per class or per month, often by parents or an institute
Freelance work (writing, design, data entry)Paid per task or project; you are not an employee
Event and weekend workShort engagements paid per day or per event

Where can I look?

Start with places that verify employers: your college placement cell, a company's own careers page, and the government's National Career Service portal (ncs.gov.in). On LiveRec you can browse jobs for free; applying needs an active paid plan. Search for the employer's name separately before you respond to any message.

What should I confirm in the offer?

ItemWhy it matters
Hours and days per weekAvoids a "part-time" job that becomes full-time
Pay rate and pay dateYou should know exactly when and how you are paid
Employee or freelancerDecides tax deduction and benefits
Who is the employerA name you can look up independently
Notice and exit termsSee the notice period guide

Is part-time income taxable?

Yes, earnings are income. An employer may deduct tax at source (TDS); a freelancer may have to report the income in a return. Check the Income Tax Department site (incometax.gov.in) for current rules, or ask a qualified adviser. If you are a student, also check your institution's rules on outside work.

How do I avoid fake part-time offers?

Be careful when a message says you will earn a fixed daily amount for liking videos, reviewing products or "simple tasks", asks you to top up an account, or wants an OTP. Read how to identify fake job offers in India. If you have lost money, call 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. To report a suspected fraud call, SMS or WhatsApp message, use Sanchar Saathi Chakshu (sancharsaathi.gov.in); Chakshu is for reporting suspicious messages, not for recovering money already lost.
