What is pay transparency?
Pay transparency means openness about what jobs pay. It covers employers publishing pay ranges in job postings, sharing how pay is set, and allowing employees to discuss their pay. In the US the rules differ by state and city, so check the law where the job is located.
Two related ideas
The first is range disclosure: some states and cities require pay ranges in postings or on request. The second is protection for discussing pay: employees are often protected when they discuss their pay, though the details differ by employer and state. The EEOC states that men and women in the same workplace must be given equal pay for equal work.
What job seekers and employers should do
Candidates can compare the posted range with their own expectations and ask how an offer fits within it. Employers should keep pay ranges consistent with internal pay structures and review the local rules before posting a job in a new location.
Example
A job posting for a location with a pay disclosure rule lists the minimum and maximum pay for the role. The candidate uses it to prepare her salary expectation.
