What is Gig Worker?
A gig worker, under the Code on Social Security, 2020, is a person who performs work or takes part in a work arrangement and earns from it outside a traditional employer-employee relationship. A platform worker is someone engaged in platform work. The Code lets the government notify schemes for them, funded partly by aggregators.
Example
A delivery partner on an app is a platform worker. The Code allows schemes on life and disability cover, health and old-age protection, but the schemes and start dates are for the Central Government to notify.
