What is a CTC breakup?
A CTC breakup is the itemized list of components that make up your cost to company in India, such as basic pay, HRA, allowances, employer PF, gratuity and variable pay. It shows how the annual total divides, and why take-home pay is lower than CTC divided by twelve.
Common components
Fixed parts usually include basic salary, house rent allowance and a special or other allowance. Employer-side parts include the employer share of provident fund and gratuity. Variable pay and joining or retention bonus depend on conditions. Deductions from your pay include the employee PF share, professional tax and TDS.
What to check
Ask which parts are fixed and which are conditional, whether variable pay is paid in full if targets are met, and whether the employer PF is inside or on top of the stated CTC. The new wage definition can make basic pay a larger share of the total, so read the revised breakup after any change. See the CTC vs in-hand guide for how to work out take-home pay.
Example
An offer shows an annual CTC divided into basic, HRA, special allowance, employer PF, gratuity and a target variable amount. The employee adds up only the monthly fixed items and deductions to estimate her in-hand pay.
