How to become a school teacher in India: B.Ed, CTET and state TET

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

To become a school teacher in India you usually need the minimum qualification set by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), typically a teacher education degree such as a B.Ed, and a pass in a Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET or a state TET) for posts in Classes I to VIII. Rules vary by school type and state.

What does a school teacher do?

A school teacher plans lessons, teaches a class, assesses learning and supports children's development. Primary teachers generally handle many subjects for younger classes; upper primary and secondary teachers specialise by subject. In government schools, recruitment is through state or central notifications; private schools set their own hiring process within the minimum qualifications.

Typical duties:

  • Plan and deliver lessons that match the curriculum.
  • Assess and record student progress.
  • Manage classroom behaviour and encourage participation.
  • Communicate with parents and school leadership.
  • Take part in school events, training and administrative work.
  • Support children who need extra help.

Education, training and licence route

  1. The CTET site states that under Section 23(1) of the RTE Act, passing a Teacher Eligibility Test is an essential qualification for appointment as a teacher of Classes I to VIII, per NCTE notifications of 2010 and 2011.
  2. CTET is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on behalf of the Ministry of Education. Eligibility follows NCTE minimum-qualification regulations and any additional rules of the recruiting government, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan or Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Paper-specific rules and the validity period of the certificate are in the CTET Information Bulletin, so check the current one before you apply.
  3. States run their own TETs for state school recruitment; check your state education department.
  4. B.Ed and other teacher education courses must be at NCTE-recognised institutions. Verify the institution at ncte.gov.in before joining.

Skills that matter

Subject knowledge, clear explanation, patience, classroom management, empathy, local-language ability, and the ability to use simple technology for teaching. Good teachers also learn to give feedback and keep records.

Job outlook

School education is a large and steady employer across government and private sectors, and vacancies are announced through state and central notifications. Eligibility tests are typically a first step before recruitment.

How pay is structured

Government teacher pay follows the pay scale or level in the recruitment notification, with allowances. Private school pay is set by the school and can differ widely. Ask whether the offer is fixed, on contract or probation, and whether provident fund applies. See CTC vs in-hand for how to read an offer.

No figures are given here because we only use official sources and pay differs by employer, city and experience. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.

How to get hired

  • Confirm eligibility in the notification and the CTET bulletin before applying.
  • Keep certificates, B.Ed marksheets and TET result ready.
  • Prepare a demo lesson, as many schools ask for one.
  • Apply to state education department notices and verified school careers pages.
  • Do not pay anyone to "arrange" a teaching post.
