What does a front office executive do?

The front office is the first and last place a guest deals with. The executive manages arrivals and departures, confirms bookings, checks identity as the hotel policy requires, takes payment, answers questions about the hotel and city, and passes requests to housekeeping, food and beverage or maintenance. Shifts are usually rotational and cover weekends and holidays.

Typical duties:

  • Welcome guests and complete check-in and check-out.
  • Manage room reservations and room availability.
  • Handle guest complaints politely and escalate when needed.
  • Coordinate with housekeeping and other departments.
  • Keep guest records accurate and confidential.

Education and training route

  1. The National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Tourism, lists its academic programmes on its site. They include a Diploma in Front Office Operation and a B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration.
  2. NCHMCT also publishes lists of central, state, public sector and private institutes of hotel management that are affiliated with it. Check that an institute is listed before you pay fees.
  3. The NSDC and sector skill councils publish training and qualification packs for hospitality roles. Search the Skill India Digital Hub for current courses.
  4. Some hotels hire 12th pass candidates and train them in house, so read each advertisement for its own requirement.

Skills that matter

Clear spoken English plus Hindi or the local language, grooming, patience, a service attitude, basic computer skills for reservation software, and calm handling of complaints. Knowing another language helps in tourist cities.

Job outlook

Hotels, resorts and other hospitality businesses employ front office staff, and the National Career Service lists hospitality as a job sector you can search. Seasonal demand and city differ, so look at several employers.

How pay is structured

Pay differs by employer, city and experience, so no figures are given here. Ask what part of the offer is fixed, what is variable, and what reaches your bank account each month. Use the CTC to in-hand calculator and the CTC vs in-hand guide to compare offers on take-home pay.

How to get hired

  • Practise a short greeting and a role play of check-in.
  • Be ready to discuss how you would handle an unhappy guest.
  • Keep certificates and ID ready.
  • Apply through the employer's own site, campus drives, the free National Career Service portal and verified boards. Read fresher job search challenges for common hurdles, and keep your documents ready as the invitation asks.

Beware of fake job offers

A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, uniform, kit or "registration". The National Career Service states that it charges no fee at any stage and that jobseekers should not pay fees to employers; its toll-free helpline is 1514, and cyber fraud can be reported on 1930. Read how to identify fake job offers in India before sharing documents or money.
