What do GNM and ANM nurses do?
Both qualifications prepare you for hands-on care, but the settings differ. A GNM graduate usually works in hospitals and clinics, caring for patients on wards and in units under a doctor's plan. An ANM works closely with communities and families, including mother and child care, immunization support and health education, often at sub-centres and primary health facilities.
Typical duties:
- Check and record vital signs and report changes to the doctor.
- Give medicines and injections as prescribed and keep accurate records.
- Support mothers and newborns and help with health education.
- Follow infection control and biomedical waste rules.
- Keep patient charts and shift handover notes.
Course and registration route
- Choose a programme from the Indian Nursing Council's list of nursing programmes. The council lists ANM (2 years), GNM (3 years from 2015-16, and 3 and a half years earlier) and the 4-year B.Sc (Basic) degree.
- Study at an institution recognized by the council. The council publishes a list of nursing institutions on its site, so check it before you pay any admission fee.
- Sit the Nursing Examination Board examination for ANM or GNM.
- Register with your State Nursing Council. The council lists R.ANM for ANM and R.N and R.M for GNM. The Indian Nursing Council also runs the Nurses Registration and Tracking System (NRTS), described on its home page as a live register of nurses.
- Government posts are advertised with their own eligibility notices, so read each notification for the exact qualification, registration and age conditions.
Skills that matter
Patience, accurate record keeping, calm under pressure, clear communication with patients and families, hygiene discipline and willingness to work shifts, including nights. For community roles, local language and respect for families matter as much as clinical skill.
Job outlook
Hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and public health programmes all employ nurses and midwives. The National Career Service lists health sector jobs as its own category, so you can search it directly. Some employers prefer a B.Sc nursing degree for certain posts, so read each advertisement for its qualification line.
How pay is structured
Pay differs by employer, city and experience, so no figures are given here. Ask what part of the offer is fixed, what is variable, and what reaches your bank account each month. Use the CTC to in-hand calculator and the CTC vs in-hand guide to compare offers on take-home pay.

Beware of fake job offers
A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, uniform, kit or "registration". The National Career Service states that it charges no fee at any stage and that jobseekers should not pay fees to employers; its toll-free helpline is 1514, and cyber fraud can be reported on 1930.
