What does a digital marketing executive do?

The executive turns a marketing goal, such as more enquiries or more repeat buyers, into daily online work. The title is broad, so some roles focus on one channel and others cover several. Read each posting's duties closely.

Typical duties:

  • Write and schedule posts and short copy for social channels.
  • Set up and monitor paid ad campaigns within a given budget.
  • Improve website pages so they can be found in search engines.
  • Send email or messaging campaigns and review the results.
  • Read analytics reports and share what changed week to week.
  • Coordinate with designers, writers and sales teams.

Education and learning route

  1. Degree. Many postings ask for a bachelor's degree in any stream. Check that your university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  2. Skills courses. Courses are listed on the Skill India Digital Hub and by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Choose a course with practical assignments.
  3. Practice. Run a small real project, such as a page for a local shop, a blog or a volunteer group, and record the steps and results.
  4. First role. Common entry titles are digital marketing intern, social media executive, SEO executive and performance marketing associate.

Skills that matter

  • Clear writing and an eye for what holds a reader's attention.
  • Basics of search optimization and how ads are bought and measured.
  • Reading analytics: traffic, clicks, sign-ups and conversion.
  • Spreadsheets for tracking budgets and results.
  • Simple design and editing tools for posts and short videos.
  • Honest reporting: say what did not work, and what you will test next.

Build proof of work

Employers hiring freshers look for evidence. Keep a short portfolio with three examples: the goal, what you did, the tools used and the result you measured. Use projects you are allowed to share, and never post a client's private numbers.

Growth and job outlook

Executives commonly grow into specialist roles (search, paid media, content, marketing analytics), then into manager and head-of-marketing roles. Because the field changes quickly, keep learning and update your portfolio every few months.

How pay is structured

Pay depends on the employer, city, experience and the structure of the offer. Offers are usually quoted as annual cost to company (CTC), and the monthly in-hand amount can be much lower once provident fund, taxes and variable components are separated out. No figures are given here because India has no official occupation pay series and we publish only officially sourced numbers. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.

How to get hired

  • Tailor your CV to each posting; see the ATS resume guide.
  • Lead with results you can measure, not course names.
  • Prepare to walk through one campaign from goal to result.
  • Freshers can also read the fresher jobs guide.
  • Register on the National Career Service portal, which offers an AI resume builder.

Beware of fake job offers

A genuine employer does not ask you to pay for an interview, training, a laptop, software or a "registration". Read how to identify fake job offers in India before you share documents or money.
