What does a customer care executive do?

A customer care executive is the first contact between a business and its customers. In a voice process you speak with customers; in a non-voice process you write chat or email replies. Roles may be inbound (answering) or outbound (calling for service or sales follow-up). Shifts can be rotational and some processes run at night to serve other time zones.

Typical duties:

  • Answer customer queries accurately and politely.
  • Log each interaction in the company system.
  • Solve problems or escalate to the right team.
  • Follow scripts, policies and quality guidelines.
  • Meet quality and response-time targets set by the employer.
  • Keep customer data confidential.

Education, training and licence route

  1. No licence is needed. Employers mostly ask for a minimum education and language ability, then run a voice or typing assessment and interview.
  2. The NSDC and sector skill councils (including the sector body for business process management) publish training and qualification packs for customer service roles. Search the Skill India Digital Hub for current courses and qualification packs.
  3. Many companies provide paid induction training; treat any request for a training fee as a warning sign.
  4. Language skills matter: Hindi, English and the regional language of your customers.

Skills that matter

Clear speaking or writing, listening, patience, typing speed, basic computer use, product knowledge, and handling stress. For non-voice work, grammar and email etiquette matter more.

Job outlook

Banking, telecom, e-commerce and utilities all keep customer service teams, and many employers hire freshers because they train on the job. Roles are shifting toward chat and email, so written skills help.

How pay is structured

Pay in these roles often includes a fixed part plus shift or night allowances, and sometimes incentives tied to quality or targets. Ask what is fixed and what is incentive, and whether provident fund and insurance apply. Use the CTC to in-hand calculator and CTC vs in-hand to understand your monthly credit.

No figures are given here because we only use official sources and pay differs by employer, city and experience. Compare offers on in-hand pay using the CTC vs in-hand guide and the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.

FAQ

What is the difference between voice and non-voice process?

Voice means speaking with customers; non-voice means chat or email.

Is a degree required?

Often a 12th pass or graduate is enough, but each employer sets its own requirement.

Is training free?

Genuine employers provide induction training at no cost to you. Asking you to pay for training or a "security deposit" is a red flag.
