Minimum wages in India: what they are and how to check yours

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

Minimum wages in India are the lowest rates an employer may legally pay for work in a scheduled job. A minimum wage is a legal floor, not market pay, not an average and not a salary offer. There is no single number for the whole country that applies to every job. Rates depend on who the "appropriate government" is (central or state), the job category, the skill level and often the area.

At a glance

  • Minimum wages are set by the Central Government for central sphere work and by each state for its own scheduled employments.
  • Most notified rates have two parts: a basic rate and a Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) that follows the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers.
  • Many notifications revise VDA twice a year, effective 1 April and 1 October. States follow their own timetables, so check the date on the notice you rely on.
  • Real job offers are usually above the legal minimum. Use these figures to check you are not paid below the floor, not to guess what a job pays.

Central sphere rates

The Central Government's latest VDA order took effect on 1 October 2026. See central sphere minimum wages from 1 October 2026 for the agriculture and non-coal mines tables, with the order number, date and source.

How to check your own rate

  1. Confirm whether your employer's work is central sphere or state sphere.
  2. Open your state labour department's website and find the current minimum wages notification for your type of work. Use the gazette notification, not a summary on a third-party site.
  3. Check the effective date and the area or zone and skill category that applies to you.
  4. Compare it with your pay. If your daily or monthly pay for full days of work is below the notified rate, you can raise it with the labour authority.

State rates change often and some states are moving to new labour-code rules, so LiveRec publishes a state table only where we have read the current official order. Until then, use the state's own notice.

Minimum wage versus CTC and in-hand pay

Minimum wage rules set a floor on wages. They are not the same as CTC, and PF and other deductions come out of pay afterwards. To see how a CTC turns into take-home pay, read CTC vs in-hand salary and What is PF / EPFO?.
