eMigrate registration: how does it work?

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

India focus: eMigrate registration. Checked against official Indian government pages on 30 October 2026. Where official pages disagree, this page says so.

eMigrate is the Government of India portal (emigrate.gov.in) for workers who need emigration clearance, foreign employers and registered recruiting agents. The MEA says it was launched in 2015 to make recruitment of ECR category workers transparent. If you hold an ECR passport and have a job offer in an ECR country, you use it.

What does the portal do?

  • Registers the emigrant and issues emigration clearance through the Protector of Emigrants.
  • Requires foreign employers to register before they recruit from India, so Indian missions can verify them.
  • Holds the public list of registered recruiting agents and the notices of illegal agents.
  • Validates passport details through the Passport Seva system and PBBY insurance policies, and links to the airport immigration system, which checks clearances at the check post.
  • Takes complaints from emigrants and their families.

How do I register if an employer hired me directly?

The MEA FAQ says initial registration is done on eMigrate from any computer with internet access. Create your account, enter your passport and job details, upload the contract and visa copy, buy the required PBBY insurance, and submit the case to the Protector of Emigrants. The exact form fields change; follow the portal screens.

What if I came through a registered agent?

The agent files the case on your behalf. Ask the agent for your case number and confirm it on the portal. See how to check the agent.

I have an ECNR passport. Should I register?

Registration for ECNR passport holders going to ECR countries for work is voluntary. The MEA says ECNR holders who register can avail the PBBY benefits. An advisory in 2018 that would have made it mandatory was later put in abeyance.

Where do I get help?

The MEA operates the Pravasi Bhartiya Sahayata Kendra (PBSK) helpline, 1800 11 3090, 24 hours, in 11 Indian languages, plus WhatsApp and email assistance listed in the overview. There is also an eMigrate helpdesk for portal problems.

How do I report a cheating agent?

Lodge a complaint on eMigrate or send it to the Protector General of Emigrants. See the Protector of Emigrants and job scam safety for India.

What to have ready before you start

The MEA FAQ says initial registration for direct recruitment is done on eMigrate from any computer with internet access. Based on the MEA pages, have these ready:

  • Your passport, valid for at least six months. The MEA page on emigration for employment says to check this.
  • The visa, and a check that its category matches the job you were recruited for.
  • The employment contract, signed by you and the employer.
  • Your PBBY insurance policy details. See PBBY insurance.

Step by step, in plain words

  1. Confirm you need to register: ECR passport, ECR country, employment purpose. See ECR vs ECNR.
  2. Create your account on the official eMigrate portal. Type the address yourself, as emigrate.gov.in.
  3. Enter passport and job details. The MEA overview says the portal validates passport details against the Passport Seva system, which helps catch typing errors and fake passports.
  4. Upload the contract and visa as the portal asks.
  5. Buy the PBBY policy. The portal checks the policy with the insurance agency.
  6. Submit the case to the Protector of Emigrants and track it. The clearance is later checked online at the airport immigration desk.

Common mistakes

  • Using a lookalike website. The MEA says foreign employers, agents and emigrants all use the one official portal.
  • A typing error in the passport number or name. The MEA says the passport check exists to catch these, so fix them at the start.
  • Paying someone "to do eMigrate for you" without checking they are a registered agent. See how to check the agent.
  • Skipping the portal because the employer says clearance is "not needed." For ECR workers in ECR countries it is the law.

Frequently asked questions

Does eMigrate cost money to use?

The MEA pages we read do not list a portal fee. They do mention a challan for the prescribed emigration fee and the insurance premium. Ask your POE for the amount, and do not pay an agent extra for filling a form.

Can my family complain for me?

Yes. The MEA overview says grievances can be logged by emigrants or their families, friends or relatives on eMigrate or through the helpline.

Do foreign employers have to register?

Yes. The MEA overview says foreign employers must register on eMigrate before recruiting from India, so Indian missions can verify them.
