- Match questions to your written marketing manager requirements, one per must-have.
- Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order.
- Score right after the interview, before comparing notes.
What should you know about the role?
Marketing managers plan campaigns, manage budgets and measure results with a team or agencies. Use the questions below to test planning, measurement and leadership, and ask for portfolio examples they are free to share without confidential data.
Interview questions
| # | Question | A good answer shows | Red flags |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Walk me through a campaign you owned from goal to result. | Clear goal, audience, channels, measured outcome | Cannot name the goal or result |
| 2 | How do you decide where to spend a limited budget? | Tests, data, tradeoffs | Spreads evenly with no logic |
| 3 | Which metrics do you report to leadership and why? | Ties metrics to revenue or goals | Reports vanity numbers only |
| 4 | Tell me about a campaign that failed. | Owns it, names lessons | Blames others |
| 5 | How do you work with sales on lead quality? | Shared definitions, feedback loop | Silos |
| 6 | How do you build a messaging strategy for a new audience? | Research, testing, iteration | Guesses |
| 7 | How do you manage agencies or freelancers? | Clear briefs, review cycles | Hands off completely |
| 8 | Describe how you have coached or developed a team member. | Specific coaching and growth | No management examples |
| 9 | How do you handle a deadline that conflicts with quality? | Scopes, communicates, decides | Silent overrun |
| 10 | What tools do you use for planning and analytics? | Honest depth, learns new tools | Overstates |
| 11 | How do you handle disagreement with an executive? | Evidence and respect | Avoids or bulldozes |
| 12 | What would your first 90 days look like here? | Listens first, audits, sets priorities | Generic plan |
Follow-up probes
Ask for numbers they can share, such as percent change, and for what they would do differently. Ask 'Who made the final decision?' Open every interview with the same short overview of the role and the hiring steps, take brief notes on each answer, and leave five minutes for the candidate's own questions. Compare candidates only after every scorecard is complete, and keep your notes so the decision can be explained consistently later. If an answer is thin, repeat the question once in the same words rather than hinting at what you want to hear. Interviewers who score independently and then discuss tend to reach fairer, better-documented decisions.
Scorecard (1 to 4)
Score each criterion from 1 (weak, no relevant example) to 4 (strong, specific and repeated evidence) right after the interview, before you compare notes.
| Criterion | Questions | What a 4 looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy and planning | 1, 2, 6, 12 | Clear logic and tradeoffs |
| Measurement | 3, 4, 10 | Links results to business goals |
| Leadership | 7, 8, 11 | Develops people, handles conflict |
| Collaboration | 5, 9 | Works across teams |
Set your shortlist rule before the first interview, for example an average of 3 or higher with no criterion at 1. Copy the grid into the interview scorecard template.
Fair interviewing
Ask every candidate the same job-related questions. Keep questions about age, family plans, religion, disability, national origin or other protected traits out of the interview, and ask about physical requirements only as the EEOC allows.
