What is Special Allowance?
A special allowance is a general, fixed allowance an employer adds to pay after basic pay and named allowances, often the largest part of the salary breakup. It is not listed in the base definition of wages, but under the 50% rule, allowances above half of total remuneration are added back to wages.
Example
In a pay structure with basic pay of Rs 30,000 and a special allowance of Rs 55,000, the allowance counts toward the 50% test. Ask HR how your payroll applies it to PF and gratuity.
