What is ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return)?

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

The Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) is the monthly filing an employer makes to EPFO, listing each member's wages and the employee and employer provident fund contributions for the month. It is submitted on the EPFO Unified Portal, and payment is made against it. It is not the passport category ECR.

Example

An employer files the ECR for March after payroll closes, showing each employee's UAN and PF wages. If the ECR is not filed, the employee's PF passbook may not show that month's contribution.

See PF and EPFO, UAN and ECR and ECNR for the passport meaning.
