What is ECR and ECNR (Emigration Check)?

LiveRec EditorialUpdated

ECR and ECNR are categories on an Indian passport. ECR means emigration check required, and ECNR means emigration check not required. They relate to the Emigration Act, 1983 and decide whether a person going abroad for work needs clearance through the eMigrate system. The Ministry of External Affairs sets the rules.

Example

A candidate with an offer from a foreign employer checks eMigrate to learn whether the passport category and destination require clearance. Do this before paying anyone any "processing fee".
