Recruiting software alternatives for independent recruiters
Independent recruiters have more software options than ever, and most are built for large teams. This page is vendor-neutral. It shows how to compare any recruiting software against the way you work, then explains what LiveRec offers Live Recruiters. No competing product is named or ranked.

Summary
- Start from your weekly tasks, not from a feature list.

- LiveRec facts come from LiveRec's own pages.
- Fees between you and a client are agreed outside LiveRec, and LiveRec takes no share of them.
What kinds of recruiting tools exist?
| Kind of tool | What it does | Fit for one person |
|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheet | One row per candidate per role | Fine for a few placements |
| Applicant tracking system (ATS) | Tracks candidates and jobs. See the ATS glossary entry | Useful once you carry several roles |
| Sourcing tool or candidate database | Helps find candidates | Useful if sourcing is your bottleneck |
| Client and agreement records | Keeps signed terms and contacts | Needed whichever tool you choose |
| Combined desk | Roles, candidates, interviews and records in one place | Fewer tools, but check each part |
How do you score any option?
Use the criteria in our guide on how to choose an ATS as a solo recruiter. In short:
- Pipeline by client and role.
- Resume capture and search.
- Follow-up reminders.
- Email and calendar fit.
- Client sharing of shortlists.
- Fee and placement tracking, including guarantee end dates.
- Import and export.
- Access and security, including two-step sign-in.
- Cost control for one user, and cancellation without penalty.
- Ease of use without training.
Weight the rows that match how you work, trial with 20 real candidates and 3 real roles, and export everything before you decide.
What does LiveRec offer Live Recruiters?
From LiveRec's page on how it works for Live Recruiters.
- Client companies are added to your account, with each signed client agreement uploaded as a PDF. The client contact receives a confirmation link by email and needs no account. LiveRec then reviews it.
- You can post roles for clients. Jobs carry a recruiter-posted badge.
- Live sourcing lets you unlock a candidate with one credit. The unlock is permanent, the invitation is included and credits are held per client.
- You interview and manage applicants in the same portal.
- Signed agreements, offers and contracts are kept seven years from signing, then deleted automatically.
- Two-step verification is required.
- Recruiters pay for access. LiveRec does not pay recruiters and takes no share of your fees.
Pricing is shown on the recruiter pricing page after sign-up.
Where does LiveRec fit, and where might something else?
| If you need... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Roles, candidates, interviews and client agreements in one desk | LiveRec |
| Candidates separated by client, with credits held per client | LiveRec |
| A spreadsheet-sized tool for your first placements | A spreadsheet, see the guide above |
| Integrations with systems you already run | Check each tool's own pages for what it lists |
What about records and privacy?
You hold personal information about candidates. In the US, the EEOC says employers must keep personnel or employment records for one year, longer if a charge is filed. Ask clients which records they expect you to keep, and choose a tool that lets you find, export and delete a candidate's record. How do you find clients and handle splits?
Software does not bring clients. See how to get recruiting clients and split placements for approaches that work with any tool.
Common mistakes
- Choosing on a long feature list.
- Entering data twice in two tools.
- Skipping the export test.
- Paying for a team plan you do not need.
- Keeping records you no longer need.
Questions people ask
Is one option the right answer for every role? No. Reach, screening and records matter differently for each hire, so match the tool to the role.
