Software Engineer Resume Example: how to format it section by section
A software engineer resume example should read like a short technical summary: languages and tools first, then projects and jobs described by what you built and how it changed something. Keep it to one page, link to code you can discuss, and match the stack in the posting. A fictional sample follows.
At a glance
- One page, plain text order, no skill rating bars.
- Put a skills block with languages, frameworks and tools near the top.
- Write bullets as built, changed, reduced or shipped, with a measurable result if you have one.
- Link to a portfolio or repository you are ready to discuss.
How to format a software engineer resume, section by section
Header
Name, city and state, email, phone, and two links at most: a code repository profile and a portfolio or professional profile. Avoid links to projects you cannot explain in an interview.
Summary
Optional for experienced engineers, useful for career changers. One or two lines: years, domain, stack. Example: "Backend engineer with four years building web APIs in Python and SQL, focused on reliability and clear documentation."
Skills
Group by type: Languages, Frameworks, Data stores, Cloud and tooling, Practices. Order by relevance to the posting, and cut anything you could not answer a question on. A recruiter searching the text will match exact tool names, so spell them the common way.
Experience
Each bullet follows verb, what you built, scale or result. Example: "Built a notification service in Python that cut duplicate alerts for internal users." Mention team size, code review, testing and on-call duties where true. Avoid a list of every ticket.
Education and credentials
Degree, school and year, or a bootcamp or self-taught line with the projects that prove it. Experienced engineers can move education to the bottom and keep it to one line.

EDUCATION
B.S. Computer Science, Example State University, 2021Tailor the software engineer resume to each posting
Read the posting and copy its exact terms into your summary, skills and bullets, but only where they describe work you have done. Put the requirement that appears first in the posting first in your skills block. If two jobs ask for different strengths, keep two versions of the software engineer resume rather than one vague one.
Before you send it, copy the resume into a plain text file and read it top to bottom. Headings should be in order, dates should line up and no line should be cut off. Then ask a friend in the field to read it for ten seconds and say what the job is. If they cannot, move your strongest software engineer facts higher.
Keywords recruiters scan for
Recruiters and screening software search for exact terms from the posting. These are common for a software engineer resume; use only the ones that are true for you, and match the spelling the job post uses.
software engineer, Python, JavaScript, SQL, REST API, unit testing, code review, continuous integration, Git, cloud, debugging, agile.
Common software engineer resume mistakes
- Listing every technology you have touched once.
- Describing tasks ("worked on backend") instead of what you built.
- Using skill bars or percentages that mean nothing to a reviewer.
- Linking to empty or unfinished repositories.
- Running to three pages with old jobs.
